FIRE ON THE NORTH TOWN BELT.
The house cf Mr J. Gwatkin, situated in a lano leading from the North town belt, caught fire at about twenty minutes to eight o'clock last night. It appeared that Mr Gwatkin, junr., was boiling glue in the kitchen, and having left the pot on the fire, during his absence the glue boiled over and caused a blaze which caught the woodwork, and the building being very old the flames soon spread to the walls. On his return the fire had obtained a firm hold, and could not be arrested by any means then at command. All that could be done was to try and save the furniture, but so rapid was the progress of the conflagration that only a small portion could be got out of the house. The alarm having been given, the Fire Brigade was soon on the spot, and a line of hose was taken to the river, somo distance away, but the whole of the building was enveloped in flames before the water could be brought to bear upon it. Hence the house was burnt to the ground, nothing but a chimney remaining. The house was insured for £2OO and the furniture for £250, both in the National Insurance Company.
