BENEVOLENT AID ASSOCIATION.

A meeting of the Benevolent Aid Committee was held at the secretary’s office this morning. Present—His Worship the Mayor, Messrs Morton, Bird, Hargreaves, and Mitchell, hen. sec. An apology was received for the absence of Mr Pratt. The Chairman announced that the credit balance at the Bank was £l7 15s 2d ; subscriptions received since last meeting, £l2 10s, made up as follows : —£s from Mr Robt. Wilkin, and £5 from Mrs Barker; Mr Sail, £1; Mr Summerhays, 10s; in memoriam, George Waterfall, £1 ; total, £l2 10s. The following letter from the caretaker was read :—“ Gentlemen, —According to instructions received from the hon. see., I ordered from MrKnapman 561 b. pearl barley, which has enabled ns to keep up the supply of soup, and will be sufficient to last to the end of this week. We have received donations since September 14th as follows : —Messrs Clifford and Co., 2 bags onions ; Mr Allman, 8 sacks potatoes ; Mr Sail, Papanui, 8 sacks potatoes and cash £l. The cash from Mr Sail I have paid to Mr W. R. Mitchell. Stock meat has been received from Messrs Culliford, Gainsford, Hopkins, Langdown and Judge. Relief distributed since the 14th as undermentioned : —Coals, 1 bag; sag,.', 41bs. ; flour, 5501 b.; soup, 8 gallons daily. First relief 4, second 1, third 1, fourth 1, fifth 5, sixth 6, seventh 1, ninth I—total 20. I submit to your notice my monthly account for examination as per pass book, &o. Mr Knapman, kitchen account, £5 3s 2d; ditto, house, £2 15s; caretaker’s wages and sundry account, £5 6s ; total, £l3 4i 2d. Or.—By Knapman, discount, 8s Id ; by donations, 2s 4i ; by wages, £2 ; total, £2 10s 5d ; balance, £lO 13s 9d. Gentlemen, —Fully expecting this to he the last week of the soup kitchen, I respectfully draw your attention to George Archer, the cook, who has faithfully performed all duties, and I have at all times found him civil, attentive, and obliging. Should any of your committee hear of any light employment, ho will be very thankful if you will kindly use your influence on his Dehalf. He has been accustomed to horses. “ I am, &c., “ Samubli Alpb, Caretaker.” The caretakers report was approved, and George Archer, the cook, referred to them, was voted relief to the extent of 30s. The secretary stated the total liabilities of the association to be £43 12s lOd, not including the balance to their credit; so that there was an actual liability of about £3O to bo met. This statement would be laid before the meeting to be held in the afternoon. On the application of Mr Mitchell, a number of petty accounts were passed for payment.

This concluded the business, and the committee adjourned.
