CHRISTCHURCH. Monday, Septembbb 27. [Before G. L. Hellish, Esq , 8.M., and A. Lean, E<q., J.P.] DBUNKENNEsa. —AIbert Hewitt waa fined 40s; four other men, for first offences, were fined 5a each, Labceny.— Henry Elliott pleaded guilty to stealing a gold brooch, value £4 10s, the property of Hannah Dunn. He had been convicted of similar offences before, and was now sentenced to six months’ imprisonment with hard labour. Charles Dee, another old offender, on remand from the 24th, pleaded guilty to stealing a swag, value 355, the property of Thomas Hassey, and begged hard to be lot off, as he was under the influence of drink at the time ho committed the offence. He was ordered to be imprisoned for four months with hard labour. Breach op Public-house Obdinance. — Edward Oookson appeared to answer a summons for keeping his hotel open and selling drink at improper hours. Mr Thomas appeared for defendant. After hearing evidence the case waa dismissed. Thomas Dorn, who admitted the breach of the Ordinance, was fined £3. Keeping Unbegisteesd Dogs. —Richard Burke and James Kennedy were fined 40a and costs. A charge against James Howton waa adjourned for one week. Miscellaneous —Alfred Capon and Wm. Muir, two small boys, Vera charged with bathing in the Avon during prohibited hours on September 19:h. They admitted the offence, were reprimanded, and dismissed. The Bench said th it persons might bathe at any time of the nay if properly clothed. Any cases brought before them in future where this precaution had not been attended to would be severely dealt with.—M. O’Keefe and Frank Mulholland, for fighting in Gloucester street on September ISih, were fined 10s each, costs

and expenses of two witnesses. Archibald MoParlane was charged with dragging a horse behind a dray by a rope round its neck. Geo. Elliott proved the offence, which was an aggravated one, the horse being lame and in a dray, was pulled after a cart in which was a strong animal until the rope broke. Defendant then got down and punished the creature severely, and later on was seen again dragging the horse at the tau of a dray ; this time a chain replaced the rope. Another witness corroborated this statement. Defendant pleaded that he was trying to cure the animal, which was given to hanging back. The Bench pointed _ out that the Act allowed the infliction of imprisonment in lieu of a fine, at the option of the Bench. Fined 10s, costs and expenses of one witness. Edward Hack, for having mnetyone unbranded sheep in his possession, fined 10a and costs. W. H. White, similarly charged on account of fourteen eheep, was fined 10b and costs. Alfred Ashbolt was gammoned for allowing sewage to run from a sink, into the side channel ana neglecting to abate the nuisance when ordered by the Soard of Health. Mr Stringer appeared for defendant. On hearing the evidence, the Bench held that the existence of nuisance injurious to health on the premises of defendant had not been proved, and further that defendant had taken all necessary steps required by the Act when ordered. Case dismissed. Elizabeth Oliver, for abusing and threatening S. A. Stephens and smashing her windows, was fined ss, ordered to pay costs and damages 34s and expense of one witness sb. Annie Wood obtained an order for the protection of her earnings from her husband, alleged to be an habitual drunkard. He was also ordered to pay 15s per week maintenance of his wife and three children.

LYTTELTON. Monday, September 27. [Before T. H. Potts and J. Ollivior, Eeqs., J.P’a. Assault. —Thomas Matthews was charged with assaulting Frederick Gillard. Complainant, master of the ketch Ocean Bird, stated that accused was cook on board. On Saturday morning, while complainant was on the wharf hauling up timber, accused made a rush at him and attempted to strike him. A witness gave evidence in support of the charge, and accused, who said ho did not belong to the vessel, was sent to gaol for six days. Larceny. —Edward Kearns was charged with the larceny of a barometer, binocular glass, and signal boob, the property of William Dampsey and Wiliam Penny Forman. Mr Nalder appeared for the prosecution. Accused asked for a remand to allow him to obtain legal assistance. Remanded until Tuesday, bail being refused.
