ROAD BOARDS.
HEATHCOIE. The above Board met on Friday last in the Board room, Ferry road, at 10 a.m. Present—Messrs W. Hawker (chairman), J. O’Neill, W. Attwood, and George Dryden. An application for leave of absence for Mr Bruoe for three meetings, as ho was visiting Australia, was granted. The clerk was instructed to assess the district for next year. The receipts for the fortnight were reported to be £278 17s. Mr Wakefield interviewed the Board re road by hia brick yard. It was decided to repair it. Also Mr Stanley Edwards, re leasing piece of road at the end of Colombo street. The Board would not lease, but would have no objection to its being •topped. Also Mr W. Forster, re Dyer's pass road. Mr Forster’s offer was accepted. Tho dork was instructed to give notice to those o jntnsctors who stopped work in consequence of wet weather that they would bo required to finish their contracts. The works committee recommended that tenders be called for metalling Mardon’e road, Hereford street, part of Worcester street, part of Dyer'n road, and part of Cashel street; also for quarrying 2000 yards of metal at Rocky Point. The following correspondence was read and dealt with—F’rcm Mr J. Hodgson, asking for an extension of time ; tho dork to reply. From Mr S. Manning, asking for some soil from tho Christchurch side of the Shag Rook ; granted under direction of tho foreman as to locality. From Mr W. Sfcjohe, asking for permission to take turf oil the Canal reserve ; refused. An applied ion for remission of rates was granted. After passing accounts for £258 7d the Board adjourned. WEST BYRETON. The monthly meeting was held on September 14th. Present—Mr Poster (in the chair), Maiudonald, Moderate, tnd Wolf. Letters were read—From Mr Dixon, asking leave of absence, which was granted. From Messrs Garrick and Oowlishaw, enclosing the bill of costs of Messrs Duncan and Oottonll re E. Jeff’s deed. Prom Mr Bretfcagh Pearson, requesting the Board to have Fester’s road cleared through to tho Waimakariri. Resolved that the work bo done as soon as the road is surveyed. Resolved that tho Oommioaioner of Railways be written to requesting that tho morning and evening trains be run on Saturdays down tho Byreton branch lino as formerly, so as to arrive at Kaiapoi in time for tho Christchurch train, and leave Kaiapoi at night on the arrival of tho train from Christchurch, and do away with the mid-day train altogether. Resolved that the Chief Surveyor be written to requesting him to have a road laid off along the south bank of tho north branch of the Eyre, fronting sections Nos. 15417 and 20235, so as to join Moderate’s read. Tho surveyor was directed to have tho following works carried out :—To put in a row of 12in. pipes across Wolf's road ; to repair the North Eyro road from the Tram road to Bennett’s ; to repair culvert near Mr Scott’s and put in new culvert on the Downs road, near the post-office ; to have a ford made on the Downs road, near Mr Bissott’s ; also, on Chapman’s boundary road, near Simpson's land. Tenders were received for various works and it was resolved to accept the next lowest tender in each case. Resolved that in future all tenders sent in must bo accompanied with a deposit of equal to 5 par oeut. on tho contract price. Accounts wore passed amounting to £260 5s Id. OUST. Tho usual monthly meeting was held on September 13th. There were present—Mr J. D. Dickinson, chairman, as also Messrs Anderson, Buddocklau, Biddle and Grant. Correspondence duriug the month was read in the usual way, and the clerk was instructed to write to Mr Williams to take a proper survey and levels at the Bennetts. The clerk was directed to write to Wellington for copies of various Acts for the use of the Board. This Board acknowledged the receipt of £ll7 6s lOd received from tho Government as their share of the Surplus Land Fund. Mr Joseph Atkinson wrote requesting an extension of time to carry out a contract, he having received on injury. Granted. The clerk was directed to call for tenders for widening and clearing of the main drain immediately, from the New Swamp road towards the east, bo as to allow of the water passing from the new road into such part of the main drain already opened out. It was decided thot'the members of tho Board should visit the New S.vamp road on Monday afternoon, and adjourn to the Board’s office at 4 p.m. to receive tenders. The clerk instructed to inspect Baxter’s bridge, and to invito tenders for constructing a new fence, consisting of two sod wall with posts and two rails along the aow road by Mr D. Jones’ land for forty chains more or less, contractor to get such materials from the Board’s site at railway station the Oust. Also to invite tenders for shingling of O’FarroU’s road, at 15 cubic yards to the chain. The clerk was instructed to visit the East Boundary road, and report best available track to bo made towards the River Ashley ; and tho clerk was further directed to see to sundry work near the Mooraki station, and to tender for forming a pieco of the road near Mr Smart’s, Tenders were opened for auch works tendered for, and in each case one was accepted. Tho Board decided to strike a rate of 6d in the £ on all rateable properties in the district, and the clerk was directed to publish the same. Accounts to the amount of £99 16s 6d were passed for payment, and the Board adjourned.
LITTLE RIVER. The monthly meeting of this Board was held on Monday, the 6th inat., all the members being present. Letters were received— From the Secretary to the Treasury, with particulars of remittance of the sum of £lB3 XBs 6d to the credit of the district fund account, share of surplus land revenue, from the manager of the Union Bank in relation to same. From the chairman of the Port Levy Bead Board, in reference to the road laid oil up the Port Levy spur, western valley. From Mr Darby, surveyor, suggesting that iron spikes be placed at intervals along lines of roads at present being laid off by him in the coarse of his survey on Mr Buchanan’s run ; also, offering his services in grading roods, preparing specifications, and estimating quantities for any work required. From Mr Superintendent Broham, stating that reserve 1258, originally sot apart for police purposes, will not be required by the department. This is in reply to on application made by the Board for a portion of said reserve for a quarry. From the Halswell Road Board, inclosing copy of a resolution adopted by that Board relative to the boundary between the two districts. From Mr A. O. Knight in reference to a proposed road diversion through his land on the Island Bay Spur. From Messrs. Harper and Scott, relative to transfer of land for » pound at Little River. From Mr Brooks, asking for information regarding the intentions of tho Board in the matter of the road from Barry’s Saddle to Okuto Valley. From Dr. Doyle (three letters) appertaining to various matters affecting bis property at Ahuriri. A petition was received from a number of residents at Little River, protesting against any further expenditure on the Barry’s Saddle and OkuteVelley road Junction, and urging that all available funds bo used on the Main Christchurch road on the margin of Lake Forsyth, in widening and improving tho same. An account for £2l vraa sent iu by Messrs. Fenton and Wilkin for supervision of Mr McPhail’s contract on Mount Bcssu and Lake Forsyth summit road. Mr Parkinson also produced the transfer of Hepworth township from Mr R. H. Rhodes to public account. Mr Mortleman interviewed tho Board on behalf of the P<-rt Levy Rood Board, in relation to tho subject matter contained in the letter from the chairman to that Beard in connection with tho road Hue laid off up the Port Lory spur, on the western valley side of the range, with tho object of getting an alteration made so aa to connect with a road in course of construction by them. Tho matter to be Juriher considered. Resolved—“ That considering tho financial position of tho Board, nuci tho prospect of any further acquisitions to the fund, being doubtful, no now works be entered into at present outside of reads already made and in uo'-, and that tho petition in roferen< o to Barry’s Saddle Junction be acknowledged, but that tho formation be one of the first put in hand when 100 funds will admit. Also, that some rocks bo removed and other improvements on tho margin of Lake Forsyth proceeded with.” A deputation waited on the Board with the object of getting about twenty chains of road formed on the north side of McQueen’s Island. It was resolved—“ That as it was represented tho application hod been made on a previous occasion, and u promise made by the Board that it should bo done, to invito tenders for the work.” In reference to tho letter from tho Halswell Board the members did not see any reason bo depart
from their original decision on the subject. An offer haring been made by Mr Jno. Driscoll, to complete abont 15 chains of formation at’ the junction of the Ohristohurch and L>ttelton roads, it was agreed upon to do it. The Board agreed to giro something to Dr Doyle towards his bridge, but regretted they had not been consulted with regard to its erection, it being voted a blunder. Mr Knight and Mr Wright to be communicated with about the road through the former’s property. Several tenders were opened, and two accepted.
