DAMAGING TREES.
At the Rmgiora Magistrate's Court on Tuesday, September 21st, three lads were convicted for damaging trees belonging to the corporation. During the hearing of the case some extraordinary statements were made by tho witnesses. One wished the Benoh to believe that stray horses had trodden trees 6tt high out of the ground and thrown them away, while another supposed the trees had been pulled up by cows, which animals he had seen with their heads in a position to cause him to be certain his theory was tho correct: one. Mr Whitefoord, K.M., pointed out that such statements as these were sheer nonsense. From bis knowledge of tree planting and horses and cattle, he could not entertain the theories raised. There was little doubt that the trees had been pulled up by he lads swinging on to them, as Btated by mother witness, and while the fine and costs ▼ere trifling in this instance, he fully intended if the same boys were caught again to -end them to the Industrial School, and nake order that their parents pay for their aaintenanoe.
