LONDON, September 20. The MarketsAt the wool sales to-day 9600 bales were offered. Prices were firmly maintained and there was a good attendance of home and foreign buyers. The per cent. New Zealand loan, 1879-1904, is quoted at 96 J. Best Scotch pig iron, No. 1, free on board in the Clyde, is at 50s. September 21. At the wool sale to-day 4900 bales were offered, making a total of 261,400 catalogued since the opening. There was only a moderate demand, hut prices were firmer. Galvanised iron is quoted at £l7. The Basutos. News has been received from Capetown that 1200 Basutos attacked the Cape Rifles, which are operating against them, and killed an officer and two men. The Rifles, however, inflicted a heavy loss on the Basutos. ' Irish Affairs* The Band League agitation in Ireland is, at the present time, very active. AquaticsTrickett and Bayoock are both well, and continue in active training. The latter is sanguine of winning his race with Blackham. He has now got his new boat from Swaddle and Winship, of Newcastle-on-Tyne. Hanlon has arrived in England, and has gone to Putney, where he has gone into training. The Australian Eleven.
The cricket match, Australians t Eighteen of Bradford, commenced yesterday. The Australians went in first and scored 183, Boyle being top scorer with 44. He was stumped out. The home team in their first innings scored 96 runs, and being over 80 runs behind their opponents had to follow on. In their second innings they have scored 88 runs for three wickets. In the first innings of the Bradford team Palmer took six wickets. Spofforth, Bannerman, and Slight are absent from this match. September 22. More Native Enemies. The latest news from the Cape states that Tambookier, a powerful chief, has joined the Basutos against the Brittsh. South-Eastern Europe. In consequence of the relations between Turkey and England in regard to the Montenegrin difficulty, various works which have been commenced at Cyprus have been stopped. The Porte has issued a "circular saying that the powers must be answerable for any result that occnrs through any violation of the rights of the Sultan. BERLIN, SeptemVer 21. The German QuestionThe Emperor of Germany is slightly indisposed. The French Crisis. The crisis in France is causing a feeling of disquiet in Germany.
