A TREAT FOR THE ORPHANS.
Yesterday (Monday) afternoon the inmates of the Lyttelton Orphanage, accompanied by the master and matron, were permitted, by the special consent of Captain Purvis, to visit H.M.S. Danse. Messrs Agar and Roberts, the proprietors of the steam launch Lyttelton, generously placed that vessel at the service o£ the children for the occacion. Every attention was paid to the little waifs on board the Danse. After being shown all over the ship a blank charge was put into one of the huge “degs of war,” and the lanyard put in the hand of one of the children, who at the given word fired, as much to the pleasure of the weather-beaten tars as to the astonishment and wonder of the little folk. An adjournment was then ordered for refreshments, the sailors doing the catering, and accommodating their visitors around the mesa-tables below, also mingling with the viands such entertaining “ yarns” as kept tho novel company in rare admiration of their big-hearted hosts. The children afterwards re-embarked in the launch, which before coming ashore steamed twice around the man-of-war, the little girls singing during the while one or two songs. Three hearty cheers were then given by the whole of tho ship’s company as the launch was leaving. Ashore a keg of gisger-beer and '« ease of buns were on tho wharf for the reception of the children on arrival, having been thoughtfully placed there by Messrs Hawkins and 00.
