MAGISTRATES’ COURTS.
LYTTELTON. Tvsfdat, 21. ("Before Joseph Beswick, Esq , E.M.. and T. H. Potts, Esq., J R] AasAtTZiTiKd tub John Knox Captain.— A seaman was charged with assaulting James Davis, master of the barque John Knox, on Tuesday. Mr H. N. Nalder appeared for tha defendant. Complainant described the assault, which appeared to be of a trifling nature. The immediate cause was a refusal of the captain to pay defendant something on account of his wages to purchase a pair of boots with. There was about £2 10s due to him. The defendant denied the assault, and showed the Bench the bad state of his boots. The Bench considered that an assault -> had been committed, but it was only a reasonable demand of the man for a pair of new bools, and it was a great pity that the complainant disagreed so constantly with his men; Tha refusal to grant the demand was not, however, sufficient to justify the conduct of the seaman, and ha would be sentenced to fourteen days* imprisonment, and to pay 8s damages.
