WATER POLICE WANTED.
To the Editor of the Globe. Snt, —Your leading article in Saturday’s issue upon the ridiculous proposal to have a netting regulation in the harbor regulations was extremely well timed, and much appreciated by the shipmasters in ttis port. The idea with some of these cheap philanthropists seems to be that because lobsters and crayfish and shellfish, as a rule, are best caught with nets that a “ shell back ” should be placed in the same category. Even this of itself would not be so objectionable did these same parties propose to find the nets themselves, instead of putting the expense upon others. If the netting proposal is worth anything, why should not the coroner and jurymen, who are so anxious to introduce rhem, get one or two nets on trial from some fl hermen, and then let them station themselves in front of the public houses about 11 p.m., when by carefully drawing the net at the right time, they might make a pretty good haul occasionally. Joking aside, sir, whit is really needed in tl is port as a preventive against accidents to drunken sailors is a staff of water police and a conveniently situated lock up, into which every old salt who is seen making for the wharves top-heavy, could be at once bundled for the night, at a charge say of 5s per head per night lor the accommodation. Yours, &c., ANCIENT MARINER. Lyttelton, September 20:h, 1880.
