BOARD OF EDUCATION.

Tho ordinary meeting of the Board of Education for the district of North Canterbury was held yesterday afternoon at three o'clock. There were present—Mr Inglis (chairman), Messrs. Montgomery, Cunningham, E. 0. J. Stevens, H. J. Tanored, 0. C. Bowen, H. R. Webb and Rev. Ohae. Fraser. The Secretary read a statement of the appointments made, and expenditure authorised by the chairman since last meeting, which was approved. In reply to Mr Tancred, The Chairman explained the nature of tho improvements to be made in the system of ventilators to the West Christchurch School. The seal of the Board was ordered to be affixed to a certain contraot let to Mr Brown. Reports of inspectors in reference to several schools within the district were laid on tho table. The Chairman also presented a report on the Normal School from Mr Malcolm, the principal. The report was read, and subsequently considered in committee. The Chairman said he had received the Special Powers of Contract Act from tho Government with reference to certain property of the Board j also the Education Reserves Act Amendment. A letter from the East Christohuroh sohool committee to the chairman, was read, suggesting the transfer of one of tho pupil teachers there. Other correspondence was read on the subject, showing that the chair, man had replied to the ettejt that ho saw no reason to adopt tho coursa suggested. Tho action of the chairman was approved by tho Board. Mr Q-. Andrews, of the Southbridgo Bohool, tendered his resignation. A letter from the committee of the same school was read, suggesting the appointment of an assistant master instead of an infant mistress. Mr O. O. Bowen said it was advisable in the interests of education (with regard to young children), and also economy in working the system, that female teachers should be employed. The Chairman said tho question was, whether tho Board should adhere to their rule as to the appointment of an infant mistress in this case. It was resolved to abide by the rules of the Board. This concluded tho ordinary business. The Board then went into committee, and on resuming adjourned.
