THE LYTTELTON NAVAL BRIGADE.
To the Editor of the Globe. Sib, —As one who was present at the Naval Brigade meeting the other night, I should very much like to be informed by what authority the offer of the command of the proposed corps was made to Colonel Brett ? I dislike to be contrary, but from the way this business was dono I'm afraid the portents are very unfavorable for bringing about that harmony and good feeling which are a sine qua non in a volunteer organisation. The step taken was as unnecessary as it was premature, and I am of tho opinion that unless the tendency shown in certain quarters to award preferment is subdued, to the end that promotion shall be regulated entirely by merit, the exertions now put forth to organise a brigade will result in discord and disaffection. I throw this out as a hint from Yours, &c, VOLUNTEER. Lyttelton, Sept. 16tb, 1880.
