[PBBSS ASSOCIATION. | WANGANUI, September 17. Railway Extension. The railway extension from Kaiiwi to Waitotara was opened yesterday by a epecial train containing a representative gathering of town and country residents. The visitors were hospitably entertained at Waitotara by Mr Adam Jackson and at Okehu by Air John Handley. At the latter place a banquet was held in the goods shed. Speeches, laudatory of the district, and the railway management under Mr Rofcherham, were made, every speaker referring to the imperative necessity for continuing the line northward, so as to get to the Taranaki end. The line will be opened to the public on Monday next, and coaches will start from Waitotara during the day. The men employed on the contract presented a testimonial to Mr Whiting, the manager. The presentation consisted of a clock, a barometer, and a field glass. Most of the men leave for Sydney. DUNEDIN, September 17. EmbezzlementAt the city Court yesterday Henry Guilford, late clerk of the Portobello Road Board, pleaded " Guilty" to two charges of embezzlement. He was sentenced to six months' imprisonment.
