[_Bt Tbleqeaph.] (Per 8.9. City of Sydney, at Auckland.) MELBOURNE, September 9. The Exhibition Commission have decided to keep tho building open on Saturday nights, also to issue season tickets. The question of opening on other evenings was loft for the decision of the committee. Sir H. Sanford, the Biitish Commissioner, objected to the night opening, and thought that the exhibitors of British pictures would be disposed to cover them up at night. He would cable England on the subject. Tho Duke of Manchester remains’in Melbourne till after the opening of the Exhibition. He then proceeds to Sydney and New Zealand, and probably Queensland. The Australian Frozen Meat Export Company, being unable to obtain definite information from the Orient Company relative to their arrangements to convey meat, have chartered the steamer Proctus, which is now being fitted with refrigerating apparatus, and will sail for London in October with the first shipment of frozen meat. SYDNEY, September 9.
Tho coalminers’ strike in the Hlawarra district continues. The Bull! Company will receive a deputation of miners this week, with a view of arriving at a settlement. The Mount Pleasant men are likely to resumo work at tho offered price of 2s 3d for hewing. ADELAIDE, September 9. The Sorata is the third vessel stranded within a mile of each other during fifteen years. The new swing bridge, stretched from the pert for tho Dock Company by the American contractors, was satisfactorily tested to-day. The bridge weighs 200 tons and costs under £3OOO. The length is 127 ft. A fight occurred at Orowee between two men, Calaghan and Currie, on the 2nd inst. Calaghan was killed, and at the inquest a verdict was returned that deceased came to his death by a fall or blow, but there was not sufficient evidence to show how such was caused.
The recent rains, which reached districts which wore suffering from drought, will do immense good.
