SYDENHAM BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The ordinary fortnightly meeting of the Sydenham Borough Council was held last evening at seven o'clock. There were present—His Worship the Mayor, Crs. Charters, Hall, Andrew, Nicholl and Langdown. Before proceeding to the ordinary business, Or. Hall proposed a vote of thanks to ex-councillor Shierlaw, and took occasion to remark upon the small interest evinced by ratepayers at the late election, which he thought was paying a poor compliment to the Council. The three new councillors, Messrs William White, Andrew Pavitt and Sydney Day were then duly sworn in and took their seats at the Council Board. An apology was tendered for the absence of Or. Joyce. A letter was read, enclosing subscription list on behalf of an unfortunate widow and her children. Each councillor subscribed something towards the list. A letter from Messrs Harman and Stevens was referred to the works committee. A discussion arose on the question of Mr Whitelaw's account for plans of fire brigade station, and it was resolved that the money be paid. A letter from Mr Hewitt was referred to the works committee. The works committee reported—(l) As to having given notice to the Tramway Company re constructing their lines on the Ferry road and Colombo street south to the Borough levels and other technical matters in connection with the tramway. (2 ) That they had given notice to the Cemetery Board that the Council were unable to apply funds to the work referred to. (3.) As to the sale plan of Mr Harman's property, recommending that the plan be approved of, and levels fixed as per plan prepared by the Council's surveyor, also recommending that the level of the Windmill road be lowered. (4) That an agreement with Mr Harman had been approved of by the committee. The report was adopted. Or. Charters moved, and it was resolved—" That the petition re gravel pits be again brought under the notice of the Local Board of Health, and their attention requested to the matter." The finance committee report showed—Eeceipts £413 Is 103; accounts for payment, £3OB 14s 8a; credit balance at the Bank to date, £844 4s 7d. The items were passed. A petition from residents in First street, Sandridge, was received against the name of "Mona," as applied to that street. The street-naming committee suggested that the name should be changed to Huxley. A deputation of residents was also heard, and they endorsed the effect of the petition. Cr, White raised a question as to the legality of altering the name without giving notice as per by-law. The motion to change the name was therefore lost, the Council not being unanimous, and notice was then given of a motion to meet the wishes oE the petitioners at next meeting. Agreements with the Council were signed and sealed. The committee for the ensuing year were then appointed. This concluded the businesse, and the Council after briefly discussing the loan question to be considered at a public meeting on Wednesday, adjourned till the next ordinary meeting.
