MUNICIPAL ELECTIONS.

CHRISTCHURCH. The official declaration of the polling for the north-west and north-east wards of the city took place at 1 p.m. to-day. There was a very small attendance. Mr G. L. Lee declared the numbers to be as follows :

HOBTH-BAST WABD. H. Thomson 341 Edward Thomas 54 Majority for Mr Thomsorj, 287. NOBTH-T7EBT WABD. N. K. Cherrill 356 J.P.Oliver 169 Majority for Mr Cherrill, 187. Mr Lne then declared Messrs H. Thomson and N. K. Cherrill duly elected. Mr Thomson said he desired to thank the ratepayers for re-electing him. On looking a". the figures as polled in his ward ho could not but come to the conclusion that the coming forward of a second candidate was not at all seriously meant. He took it that any one who professed to have the public interests at heart should pause before makiDg the ratepayes and the other candidate go to useless expense. The fact was the opposition was only intended for annoyanco, and could never be anything like such an opposition as would indicate a wish for a change on the part of the ratepayers. It waß simply an unnecessary and useless waste of time and trouble, and putting the ratepayers to an expenso which they had no right, under the circumstances, to be called upon to do. He thanked them for having reelected him.

Mr Cherrill having briefly addressed those present, a vote of thanks to the Beturning Officer closed the proceedings. SYDENHAM. The result of the election of Councillors for the borough of Sydenham yesterday was as follows : W. While, Junr 191 Edward Pavitt 149 Sydney Day 103 W. S. Sbierlaw 83 William Merritt 36
