ASHBURTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.
At the usual fortnightly meeting of the above Council, held last Monday evening, Or. Williamson in the chair, it was stated that the balance to the credit of the Council was £l6O Is lOd. The rates collected for this year up to the present amounted to £1025 12s 9d. Or. Bullock said ho wished to make a few remarks. There was an impression on the public mind that it was owing to the negligence of the Council that the difficulty in obtaining the £I2OO subsidy for 1879 arose. This was not the case. At the first meeting in September, 1878, he brought the matter forward, and a resolution was carried to call for tenders for making a valuation of the borough. A tender was accepted, but it was afterwards found necessary to object to it, and an extension of time for making the second roll was granted. The roll was not completed till the 31st March, at which date the rate ought to have been collected, and it waa not until the 9th of June that the roll had passed the Assessment Court. It would be seen, therefore, that the Council had not neglected the matter, and he trusted the Government would not take advantage of the delay in making the roll to repudiate their claim. Some formal business having been disposed of, the Council adjonrned.
