THE DRUIDS.

A Lodge under the title of the Athelstan was opened at the district schoolroom, Phillipatown, on Monday evening under the recommendation of the Oak of Sydenham Lodge, and they are to be congratulated on the energy they have displayed in obtaining so many names to the roll of the Lodge as eighty-eight. It was intended to have used the Primitive Methodist Chapel, but at the last moment it was found that the attendance was too large for the building. The Lodge having been opened in due form by D.P. Bro. Swinnerton, assisted by the officers and members of the Christchurch Lodges, forty-five members were initiated. On the gallery behind the presiding officer stood the members in full regalia, of whom there wore several tiers, forming a fine and imposing part of the ceremony. D.P. Bro. Swinnerton having read the dispensation for opening the Lodge, the following officers were elected and installed with the usual ceremonies :—A.D., Bro. O. Tomson ; Secretary, Bro. F. H. Espenett; Y.A. Bro. R. Collier ; A.D.B.’s, Bros. Greenrod and Dixon; V. A.B.’s, Bros. Bruce and Mills; Treasurer, Bro. G. Collier; V.G., Bro. Armitage 0.G., Bro. Freeman ; Lodge Surgeon, Dr Irving ; The election of trustees and auditors was postponed until next Lodge night. A hearty vote of thanks was passed to the officers and members of the Christchurch Lodges for their presence and assistance that evening in conducting the business. D.P. Bro, Swinnerton replied stating that such was the progress of Druidism, that an application had been sent for a dispensation to open another Lodge. The Lodge was then closed. A supper was held at the Royal George Hotel in honor of the occasion, when a pleasant Lour was spent. |
