NEWS OF THE DAY.
Railway Mattbes.—Circulars have been issued to the various departments on the Christchurch section this day re the new rates of pay, by which employes are requested to signify their acceptance or rejection of the same at once, so that the places of those refusing may be filled up after Saturday next, September 11th. The various gaugers or foremen of the outdoor staff are notified to reply on behalf of their men and forward replies as received.

Sickness and Accident Mutual Assueanob Association. — A meeting of the management committee was hold last evening, when the draft rules were carefully revised. Mr W. S. King was elected chairman of the committee. Encouraging promises of support have been received from all parts of the Middle island, and agents wore appointed at Ashburton, Timaru, Oamaru, and Lyttelton. Arrangements are also being made for representing tho association in all the principal centres of the colony. Tenants Wanted. —lt is noticeable, to the most casual observer, that in all the streets of our city there are a very great number of the smaller houses lacking tenants —a not very healthy sign of the times. The only good likely to arise out of it is that the rents will doubtless come down, as it is only fair to imagine that rent, like labour, must submit to a reduction, whether it be a ten-per-cent reduction or more or less. Shameful Deception. —One of the witnesses in a case that was heard this morning had to serve a legal notice, it was not a writ, on the plaintiff. This person had a strong objection to being so served, and kept out of the way, and it appears had said a word in season to his wife, for, on his two or three separate visits to her house, she refused all the blandishments of the messenger—and the paper. Not to be foiled, however, he placed tho notice inside a letter, and with it enclosed a penny. He then registered the letter. It was posted and delivered in the usual manner. Tho receipt obtained for the letter was, of course, legal proof of the serving of the notice. Mr Stringer characterised this proceeding as a “sapient dodge,” but, as it affected his case unfavorably, he looked as if ho thought it a cruel hoax.

Mies Ltdia Hqwaede. —Playgoers in Chriatohuroh who recollect the very excellent season of burlesque and opera bouffe given some time back under the management of this lady, will bo glad to learn that she will shortly re-visit Christchurch with a company. Stack Fiee. — A stack of hay belonging to Mr O’FarrelJ, Cast Valley, was destroyed by fire on Sunday last. It appears that Mr Farrell’s youngest son, who is about five years old, left the dinner table and want to the stack yard, where he lit a match and applied it to the stack. This occurred about one o’clock in the afternoon, when the neighbours were returning from Divine service, and their prompt assistance prevented the spread of the fire.
The Cabs and the Teahwat. —Yesterday the cabmen effectually blocked the approach to the railway station of the tram cars by drawing up their cabs on the stand. So foon as the tram cars were sighted in High street detachments of cabs drove off, and, heading them, took up their position as stated. Passengers per tram car had, therefore, to alight at the end of Manchester street. It is understood that the Tramway Company have requested a conference of the cabmen and the City Council with the directors of the company as to future action, and have requested that until this takes place that hostile demonstrations on the part of the cabmen shall cease.

The appointment of a captain was considered, and it was decided to offer the command to a well-known military gentleman. Several members of the committee expressed themselves satisfied that the services of the corps would be accepted, and the secretary was instructed to communicate again with the Defence Minister on the subject. Oddfellowship in Otago. —A supplementary report from the Registrar of Friendly Societies has been presented to Parliament, and is of a somewhat grave nature: —“A short report on the valuation of the Otago District Manchester Unity 1.0. Oddfellows, has been received, and from its great import:anee I recommend that it be laid before Parliament. It will be observed that there is an actuarial deficiency in the funds of all the lodges but one. This fact is the more significant when it is borne in mind that it was from certain lodges of this district that a petition emanated for an alteration of the Act prohibiting societies from using for management purposes any of the interest accruing on the investment of benefit funds. The stats of matters disclosed is very serious, and proves the insufficiency of the scale of contributions adopted by this district.” 1.0.0.
