THE RAILWAY DIFFICULTY.
The committee of delegates met last evening at the Terminus Hotel to decide on the best amendment to be drafted for the acceptance of the Government. The various reductions were considered seriatim, and the following memorial to the Minister of Public Works was adopted : “ We, the committee appointed to consider the proposed reduction in the rates of wages, having carefully investigated the proposed new scale in connection with the rates at present paid by private firms, which have lately reduced their wages, beg leave to submit for your careful consideration the following revision of the said scale : “ Locomotive Department We propose that the rate for fitters, turners, and other artisans should range from 9s to 11s per day, or from 9s 6i to 10s fid, the former rate being preferable as being the rates pertaining outside.
“We also propose that the sailmakers be included in the rates paid to machinists and strikers. We further propose that the laborers, being skilled laborers, their rates of wages should be from fia to 7s fid per day, there being few laborers in outside shops receiving less than 7s per day. “Permanent Way—We would recommend that the wages of platelayers, being skilled laborers, should vary from fia to 7s fid per day, more particularly as the wages of laborers in the way and works department still remain at 7s per day. “We would earnestly request that you will give your best attention to these proposals now submitted to; and although we cannot guarantee that they will give universal satisfaction, yet would we feel allay some of the great dissatisfaction at' precant existing among the employes.” The items not referred to by the committee were not considered to press unfairly on the parties affected.
