[By Teiegbaph.] [Per Te Anau.] VICTORIA. MELBOURNE, August 31. In accordance with a generally expressed desire, the {chairman- of the Viotorin Racing Club has forwarded an invitation to Sir Hercules Robinson for a special complimentary race mooting. A telegram was received from Sir H. Robinson on the 25th, accepting the invitation, and naming tho 18th of September as a convenient day. The committee have determined to issue a liberal programme. The following races are fixed : Two miles Hmdles, 150 sova ; half-mile two-year-olds, 100 eovs; tho Robinson Stakes Handicap, with 250 sovs added, St. Leger coursa ; Welter Plate, a mile and a quarter, gentlemen riders; Steepleohase, three miles, 200 sovs; Farewell Handicap, mile and a quarter, 200 sovs. The Governor is making extensive preparations for forthcoming hospitalities at Government House. The parliamentary dinners are fixsd for the 3rd and 10th September. On the Ist of October, the opening day of the Exhibition, and on the 7th of October, the Governors of the various colonies, the Consuls, and the Exhibition Commissioners will be officially entertained at a largo dinner. Lady Normanby will give a State ball on the sth of October.
The " European Mail " Bays the Duke of Manchester will visit Sydney, Adelaide, and aho New Zealand, whore ho has considerable property. His daughter is not coming, as previously expected. M. Mont Mshon, the French delegate for tho inquiry into the system of colonial education, interviewed tho Minister of Education on tho 25th. It is expected that much mutual benefit will result from Mont Mahon's visit. M. Ferdinand Journet, a French engineor of roada and bridges, and a delegate to inquire into tho publio works of the colonies, interviewed Mr Langridge on Friday. The Chiof Secretary on Monday was presented with a memorial to the Governor, signed by a number of shipmasters of Melbourne, praying for the romiasion of imprisonment on Captain Thomson, of the Trochrague. Tho nearly completed the new Reform Bill. At present, however, no will only submit it pro forma, postponing tho diacuaaion till next year. Kelly is rapidly regaining strengh. He has now been removed to an ordinary coll, and his manner is greatly subdued. The followng have been appointed a Board of Enquiry into tho Ford-Bain affair:— Sinclair and Johnson, of the Tjns foundry, and Fulton, of Fulton's foundry. The Board have examined only two witnesses, Lang, the iron inspector, and Singleton, engineer's accountant, and it is expected to report on Monday.
NEW SOUTH WALES. SYDNEY, August 31. Mr Parkos hßs received a telegram from tho Governor of Bombay that a strange vessol passed AdoD, bound for Port Breton, with a motley crow aboard. It is probably another expedition similar to the Chandernogore expedition. The increase of population over last year is 40,000, the largest that has taken place for years. The excess of arrivals OFer departures was 23,000. Tho Wolverine arrived on the 28th ta a leaky condition. Sho reports visiting Apia, New Hebrides. The natives refused to surrender the murderers of the crew of the Dauntless, and four villages and plantations wore consequently destroyed. *
