RANGIORA SWAMP DRAINAGE COMMISSION.
On Tuesday, Messrs Marshman, Bell and Lowe, the members of the Government Commission appointed to report on tho drainage of the Rangiora and Mandeville district, met at tho Road Board office, Rangiora. A number of plans, showing sections and levels of the drain and lines of drainage across the district, were inspected. At the request of Mr James Guild and others, tho commissioners proceeded to inspect the country at the mouth of the drain and the Cam, it being alleged that the overflow of tho Waimakarivi and Cam was the cause of the present line of drain being established rather than the overflow of the Oust. Tho commissioners wore informed that land reaching to Flaxton from tho Waimakariri was years ago liable to floods, when the Oust was comparatively dry, and thus the action of the conservators in making a main drain to take the overflow of the latter river through the present line was contended to be wrong in principle and damaging to properties affected. The commissioners re.heard much of what had been previously stated to them. No time has yet been stated at which tho report of the commission will be made public.
