SYDENHAM BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The usual fortnightly meeting of the Council was held lust evening, in the Borough Council Chamber, at 7 o'clock. Present— HU Worship the Mayor and all the Councilors, except Messrs Charters and Langdown. The Mayor called on the town clerk to read the attendance list for the finanoial year, which showed Councillors' atfcendacca as follows:—The Mayor, 67 ; White, 149 ; liangdown, 46 ; Andrews, 120 ; Nioholl, 31 ; Hall, 84 ; Joyce, 31 ; Charters, 55 ; Pavitt, 113; Shierlaw, 30. A letter from the Christohurch City Council was road, stating that many of the men employed breaking stones in Christohurch were Sydenham residents, and suggesting that like employment be found them in that borough. Referred to the works committee. A letter was read from Mr Stevens, M.H.8., enclosing a copy of the Sydenham Borough Council Empowering Bill as paused. "Reoeived with thanks. Mr Whitelaw wrote asking payment of an account due to him for plans. It was agreed, owing to the absence of the chairman of the fire prevention committee, to refer the same to that gentleman, and the dark was instructed to advise Mr Whittlaw that the matter would be finally dealt with at the next meeting of the Council. A letter was received from the Chairman of the General Cemetery Board, advising the Council that the Selwyn County Council had made a grant of £IOO, conditional on the iij.id Boards and and municipalities ooncornod finding the sum of £2OO, to make up a total of £3OO to form and metal the uncompleted portions of the road connecting the Canal Beserve with the Cemetery, and asking the Council to grant a sum of £IOO or £l5O for that purpose. Referred to the worka committee. Tho works committee reported having held a consultation with the works committee of
the City Council re the South town belt, and that drawings and specifications had been received from that body, but as they did not correspond with the levels they were referred back for correction. They had also received a letter from Messrs Harman and Stevens, asking the Council to const) uct certain streets in rural sections 13 and 62 at the expenso of Hon. J. Hall and Mr Lancaster, the Council to take tho same over, wbioh the committee recommended for adoption. With regard to an application made for the Counoil to pay hulf cost of fencing and constructing a new road connecting Falagrave street with Opawaroad, as certain information asked for had not been supplied, the proposal waß not recommended for adoption. On the roport being conßidorod, it was agreed that a clause should be added making the Oourrc'l'a asai-ni to the proposed streets in rural sections 13 and 62, contingent on the approval of the plan whea received. The report as amended was adopted. The fortnight's receipts were £702 17a 2d. Accounts passed for payment, £156 11a 2d; credit balance at Bank, £589 5a sd. The town clerk having left the chamber, a letter was read from that gsntleman asking that the question of his ealary be reconsidered. Referred to the finance committee.
September 20th being the anniversary of the borough, it was agreed to give the employes of the Council a holiday on that date. This was all the business, and tho Council adjourned.
