THE ENGLISH MARKETS
The following is Messrs Miles Bros, and Co.’s Colonial Produce Report, dated London, July 15th: — WOOL. There is nothing now to report in the condition of oar wool market since our last, very few bales having been placed privately. Recent advices from the Continent are scarcely so satisfactory as they were, and although business in our woollen districts is fairly brisk, yet manufacturers are not purchasing beyond their immediate requirements. There have been several sales of English clips at our wool fairs lately, and the prices obtained show a decline on those ruling in the spring, they are, however, even now about 25 per cent, higher than last year. The fresh arrivals for the next series of sales, to commence on the 17th proximo, now amount to 281,329 bales, as per particulars at foot, to which may be added say 25,000 bales old wools. Bales. New South Wales and Queensland 79,325 Victoria ... ... ... ... 38,131 South Australia 14,780 Western Australia 230 Tasmania ... ... ... 12,600 New Zealand ... 85,185 Cape 51,017 Total 284,329 WHEAT AND FLOUR. In consequence of the storms which we have lately experienced, prices have, daring the last fortnight hardened to some extent, but, notwithstanding the very limited supplies in granary, our millers are operating cautiously ; consequently, on the last market day, business was not particularly brisk, the principal enquiries for the better class of Colonial wheats having been made by buyers from Yorkshire. Pine, big berried New Zealand wheats have been selling up to 535, and one very superior strong new parcel realised as much as 54,3, but good ordinary qualities are not worth more than 48s. Many cat goes lately arrived from Australia have been taken for the Continent at from 48s to 50s, and the President Thiers’, now loading atMelbonrne, was sold on the Bth instant at 465, Continent. Ths total supply of wheat and flour into the United Kingdom from Ist September, 1879, to 30th June, 1883, was 13,478,983 qrs., of which 9,604,574 qrs. came from America and Canada. We quote to-day, ex granary—Australian wheat, 49s to 50s Gd, and New Zealand, 43s to 53s per 49Glb. Australian flour, 34s Gd to 36s 63, and New Zealand, 32s to 34s per 2801 b. TALLOW AND HIDES. The tallow market since the 2nd instant has been quiet but firm, and Enssian T.C. is still quoted 40a per cwt. There has been a good demand for Australian, the sales for the fortnight having amounted to about 3500 casks, and the value to-day of good to fine mutton is 34s Gd to 35s Gd, and fair to fine beef, 32s Gd to 33s Gd per cwt. The stock in first hands is now about 10,400 casks. Salted bides were in good request at the last auctions. New Zealand heavy ox realised 4Jd to [sd, and light and cows 4sd to 4Jd per lb. PRESERVED MEATS. The demand for tinned meats continues good, but prices are unaltered, although stocks are jotting reduced. The fresh meat trade has lately been dull and prices depressed.
