INVEROAEGHLL, August 2 The Orepuki Railway-
At a meeting at Riverton, re the noncompletion of the Orepuki railway, the following resolution was passed :—“ That this meeting regrets that the Government have not seen fit to place a sum on the estimates for the completion of the Oreputi railway, although the same was recommended by the Railway Commission, and promised by the Government. That this meeting strongly urge the Government to place a sum on the Supplementary Estimates for the completion of the same.” It was also resolved to wire the resolution to the members of the district. An Old FriendThe celebrated Captain Jackson Barry lectured for the hospital last night, realising a good sum.
Invercargill Hussars-
Captain Dundas, of the Canterbury Cavalry, Drill Instructor, is now here, hard at work drilling the Hussars into shape.
Shooting at a Wife
In the case of Louis Sohmolls, recently sentenced to two years for shooting at his wife, the strong point in his favor was that the bullet could not be found, the defence being that the pistol was not loaded. The wife hag now found the bullet embedded in a feather bed. It was a Terry rifle bullet. Sohmolls son is in the Invercargill cadets, which are armed with carbines of that de- ■ rfp.ion.
OAMAEU, August 23, Harrow Escape.
The Colonial Bank building had a narrow escape from destruction by fire on Sunday morning. About a quarter to one o’clock some gentlemen who were passing the building observed that there was a fire at the foot of the staircase amongst some survey poles, -to. The door wos forced open, and a supply of buckets of water was procured from the Star and Garter Hotel, and by this means the fire was quickly got under. Accident-
John Cairns, a storeman engaged in the Hew Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company’s store, had ore of his legs broken by a sack ef grain falling upon it.
A Band of Brothers. There are now five prisoners in the Oatnaru gaol under committal for trial, two to the Supreme Court and three to the District Court. DUNEDIN, August 23. Charge of EmbezzlingH. J. Guildford, clerk to the Portobelio Road Board, was arrested to-day on n charge of embezzling £2OO, the funds of the Board. A Case of Lock-jaw. An accident happened to Mr Lambeth, of Lambeth and Findlay, contracting builders, High street, on Saturday afternoon, which ie likely to terminate fatally. He was superintending the demolition of a building inPrinces street, when a nail ran into his foot. It is said that lockjaw has set in. The Cutter FawnThe cutter Fawn has turned up at the Heads. A boat supposed’to belong to the Birrell was picked up this morning.
