MELBOURNE, August 17. It is stated that Mr Ford sent a letter to the Commissioner of Railways inquiring why his services wore dispensed with. Ho also asked that a commission of practical men should be appointed to inquire into his connection with Messrs Bain, and Bon.
Yesterday’s “Age” published an account of an interview of its reporter with Kelly at Beech worth. It subsequently transpired that the reporter was Mr Gaunson, prisoner’s solicitor. The “Argus ” published a sub-leader, severely commenting upon the conduct of Mr Gaunson, which it said was, .calculated to prejudice the public mind against the witnesses for the prosecution. Mr Gaunson wrote, declaring that the “ Argus ” has rendered itself liable to a criminal information for printing matter calculated to prevent a fair trial. The “Argus” thereupon republished its former remarks on the subject in order to enable Mr Gaunson to move in the matter if he so desires.
The action Paternoster v Hackett, whereby plaintiff, a shareholder in the Provincial and Suburban Bank, sought to recover the loss sustained through the purchase of shares, has been concluded. The jury gave a verdict for the defendant.
Tho “ Argus ” states that Soudry is no longer connected with the French Exhibition Commission, but continues to represent a number of French exhibitors. The statement of the “Age ’’that Soudryleftin tho Garonne is inaccurate.
Mr Longmuir, recently accountant, has succeeded Mr Young, manager of the City of Melbourne Bank. Mr Stewart, inspector of branches of the National Bank, succeeds Mr George Thomson, manager of the Australasia Agency Banking Corporation. SYDNEY, August 17. A letter has been addressed to tho teachers of denominational schools warning them to be prepared for a discontinuance of salaries unless they qualify by submitting to examination.
The credit balance at the profit and loss account of the Sydney Meat Company at the half-yearly meeting on Wednesday was declared to be £B9OO. It was resolved to in. crease the capital with a view of entering into tho frozen meat trade.
It is probable that Parliament will be further prorogued to tho end of September. The Governor has received a telegram from Sir Hercules Robinson that ho will probably visit Sydney. Oamballo, Mata, and Wellington have been scratched for their Hawkesbury engagements. ADELAIDE, August 17. The Native who murdered Wingfield at Orokor Island in December has been captured. BRISBANE, August 17. It was stated in the Assembly on Thursday that Mr Martin, the accountant of the Northern Railway, drew a cheque for £740 last May for which no vouchor has been found. It is reported that Martin has since decamped.
