SPORTING NOTES.

Br Sinbad. The boxes at Ohokebore are pretty full, and Ontts has certainly nothing to complain of in the quality of the stuff ho has to work on. The first we interviewed on the occasion of my first visit there this season was Hilarious, who certainly is a very racing looking colt. He has thickened a good deal, and shows a lot of improvement in every way. Assuming that he can stay as well bs go fast, he will be troublesome company for most of them this season. Hia shipmate, Sir Garnet, has not been so long up, but is doing good work so f* r . He showed a lot of pace during his two-year-old preparation, and though ho has scarcely the quality of Hilarious, I should not be surprised to see him turn out nearly, if not quite, as useful a colt, as he has plenty of power and looks like being fast. Sir Modred, who occupies tbe next box, is in rare buckle, putts assures me that he has never been sick or sorry since November last, and his appearance bears this out, for he locks the picture of health. He is well forward in his preparation and will, should he train on favorably, make it very warm for bis opponents in tho Derby. His brother, Idaliuro, the highest priced colt at the last Middle Park sale, comes next, and is a youngster of exceptional ■quality. Ho takes more after Betrayer in ■color and general appearance than Sir Modred, bat though I doubt his ever being a big horse, be will have more size than the game little Canterbury Oup winner, and is built both in respect of height and bone altogether on a larger scale. Idalium is, apparently, a rather gross colt, and though Cults has been giving im plenty of work, he has a lot of lumber to oome off him yet. His neighbour, Somnus, the Traducer—Hammock colt, is very handsome. He has plenty of size, and at the time of the sale was considered by a good many the pick of the yearlings. He has oome on a good bit since bis education commenced, and I am very confident he will make a great horse. Ho is evidently in rare trim. In the next box is Ruination, a big upstanding oolt, by Totara, out of a Victorian mare Gift. Weight should not trouble this gentleman, -and I believe he has already in his work shown a good turn of foot. Another better known son of Totara’s was running outside in tho paddock in the shape of Longlands. The old chesnnt seemed fresh and healthy, and will soon be in work again. Before leaving we had a look at tho yearling colt by Traducer, out of Mata’s dam, Baupo. This ia a younger brother of the colt to whom I alluded in such favorable terms in the account of my visit to Spring Creek. He bears a closer resemblance to Mata than his elder brother Mataku, and shows a heap of quality. Ho has a beautiful head, well set on to a handsome neok, a grand forehand, good legs and back, and though perhaps his quarters scarcely promise to be so good as those of the winner of the last two Dunedin Guns, they are strong enough for anything, anu if the youngster trains on I feel sure, both from his breeding and symmetry, he will be a hard one to follow and a bad one to beat. My next visit was to Crisis Lodge, whore Harry Fuller has the team under his charge in capital working 'trim. The white faced Bogardus, who has now been up over ten weeks, has done a lot of work, and is standing bis preparation so far in a most satisfactory manner, and should he run in public as well as be has on one or two occasions in private is anything but out of the 0.J.0. Handicap. Hornby, who -has not been up quite so long, has evidently wintered well, and though full big, is in rare condition for work and sound and well. The Governor, in the next box, is perhaps tho most advanced of any of them in condition, and I fancy should have a big say in the Derby. Maritana, who has only been a short time in work, is perhaps a a little on the big side, but looks very sound and well. Old Fishhook was tbe picture of health, but it is not his owner’s intention to put him in work for another year. The long rest will no doubt give the grand old horse every chance of standing a good preparation. La Mode, a very handsome daughter of Albany and Mermaid, occupies an adjacent box. Though rather on the small scale, she stands over a lot of ground, and shows an unusual amount of quality. Since my visit to the stable it has received an acquisition in the shape of the three-year-old Mischief, by Albany, out of Malice. She is a fine well-grown filly, and was, the last time I saw her, of more than usual promise. Another of the Enfield youngsters will shortly be placed in Fuller’s hands, namely, the two-year-old Nonpareil, a very slippy looking colt by Korari, out of No Name, the dam of Nemo.

The early visitors to the course at the present time cannot but be struck with the very advanced condition for the time of year of the majority of the nags in work. This may probably be with a view to Geraldine and other early engagements, but I never recollect to have seen so many horses so far forward. Saturday morning, the occasion of my first visit, was a bitterly cold one, and the various strings did not make their appearance till late, and it was nearly half-past eight before Sam Higgott commenced proceedings by cantering his team. He subsequently sent Marie Antoinette and On Hit, with rugs on, and Natator, stripped, a good steady gallop. Grip was' restricted to walking exercise. Borneo and his own sister, Juliet, went a mile at a moderate pace, and then Foul Play, who wag looking in splendid condition, went a long steady gallop, stripped, Luna, who was looking very well, went a good striding gallop once round. Hornby and The Governor went three miles, both going well. These were followed by Sir Modred and Sir Garnet, the knightly pair doing a mile and a-half at a fair pace. La Mode and Mischief, the latter of whom has most beautiful action, went about the same distance, finishing up fast, while Bogardus went a steady three miles by himself, going kindly and well. The Miss Flat filly and the Tantrums colt cantered, and then the latter was sent away with Virginia Water, Holdernesse, and Badsworth. The youngster was pulled off at the end of half-a-mile, the other three having a serviceable gallop in company. Both the chestnut colts move in nice form, more particularly Badsworth, whom many consider to have a very good Derby chance. I was sorry that neither JangTef norTToiciuskd were on the course, and Mr John Lunn informed me they were both in physio. Jangler, he tells me, is doing well so far, and he is very sanguine about bringing him fit to the post. Mr H. Lunn was out on a fine raking looking four-year-old, a halfbrother of hia old favorite, Fakir, being by Messenger, out of old Banshee. He is by far the biggest of the old mare’s progeny, and as he already jumps well, will, no doubt, figure to advantage when the cross-country season commences.

There was not much fast work done daring the week, with the exception of a good gallop on Monday on the part of Bogardua and The Governor, while Sir Modred, Hilarious, and Soination, did excellent work of the speedy kind on Tuesday. Mr 8. Powell has purchased the three-year-old filly by Anteroa out of Sludge, and him commenced to break her. She is one of the big sort but low in condition, and will scarcely be got ready in time to fulfil her Derby engagement. Her name is Fugitive,

Mr Morell, the Sydney architect engaged by the Canterbury Jockey Club for that purpose, has forwarded the plans for the now grand stand. They are most complete, out with the short time at their disposal it seems unlikely that the club will commence the erection of the stand until after the November meeting. Amongst other items my Auckland correspondent sends ino the following Walters has just returned from Sydney, bringing with him Fanny Fisher, a very fine two-year-old colt by Yattendon out of Peeress, and a yearling filly by Yattendon from Fanny Fisher. He has a stable full just now. Libeller and Plsoatorious are in work for Hawke’s Bay. Grand Duchess, Billingsgate, and a three-year-old filly by Traduoer out of Yatterina, are doing slow work. The last named is a sweet filly. Yatterina is in foal to Musket. A. Buekland has Omega, Prince Charlie, and I think a two-year-old, with Loing. Donald Taylor has Kenilworth, 3 yw., Othello (by Maribyrnong), 3 yrs., and Bifleman in work. Mr Horsfall is here with King Quail and Ratcatcher. Their quarters are at Bowman’s, close to the course. B. Thorpe has Woolbroker and an imported filly by General Peel out of Princess Georgia. Vampire is training at his owner’s place at Dargaville. Mr Perceval intends putting Prunella Into work shortly. Mr Macdonald ha» Edward James and Daisy, but what his intentions with regard to them may bo I cannot say. He sent Repo to Musket last season. Perfume will foal to Musket before you receive this, and old Deception is also in foal to him. All the Stud Company’s mares are in foal except possibly one. Sylvia there can be no question of. I think I told you Musket’s fee was to be thirty guineas for one or two mares, and twenty-five for three or au» re mares. The Stud Company have sold

Kaottingley to go North, and I bear that The Barb is coming to them from Sydney. The annnal meeting of the A. 8.0. was he!6 yesterday, and everything was most satisfactory." W. Clifford leaves immediately for Australia, under engagement to Bay and Vallance. It is probable his first mount will bo on Caraballo, in Sydney. At the half-yearly meeting of the Paten. Jockey Club, held last week, says the eportira: correspondent of the “ Hawke’s Bay Courier,” it was decided that the annual meeting takes place on tho 19th November, aind that, in addition to the Darby of ICO sova and tho Woodside Oup of 25 sovs, a hurdle race, maiden plate, handicap, forced race, and tvro hack races should be included in the programme. ! Mr Walters, who, I am glad to observe, brought his young stock safely down from Sydney, has loft old Peeress in New South Wales', where during the coming season she will, I believe, visit Maribyrnong, and not Qoldaborough as stated in tho Auckland telegrams. Says “ Mazeppa ” :—“A glance at tho bill of faro for tho’three days’ racing in February next under tbe auspices of the Dunedin Jockey Club will satisfy owners that every effort has been made by tho Club to meet their wishes and at tho same time satisfy the public. On the first day the ball is opened with the Hurdle Handicap of 80 sova., which supersedes the Free Handicap. The Champagne Stakes have been added to by 50 sovs., making the added money 150 sovs. Next comes the Oup, the conditions of which are precisely the same as last season. That unsatisfactory race, the Ladies’ Purse, which never attracted a good field, is cut out, and the Belling Kace of 40 sovs made to fill the gap. Then we have the Publicans’ Handicap as before, followed by a Maiden Plate of 60 sovs, 14 miles. On the second day the Tallyho Handicap of 60 sovs, 14 miles, is introduced as an improvement on the old Hurdle Handicap, the main points of difference being that tho new race is shorter and of less value by 5 sovs. Then appears the innovation of the programme—the Oity Stakes Handicap, of 150 sovs, for two and three-year-olds only, one mile and a distance —which takes the place of the St. Leger, abolished, it will be remembered, at ameeting held some months ago. The Novel Race, with the old conditions, precedes the D.J.O. Handicap, which is in no way altered; and then are repeated the Railway Plate and Hack Race, also not altered from last season. The first race on the third day is the Steeplechase, increased in value to 100 sovs; then the Forbury Handicap of 150 sovs, as before, followed by the Queen’s Plato, the only alteration in which is that the distance is reduced to 2 miles. The programme concludes with tho Plying Handicap, Benevolent Scurry, and Consolation Race, each exactly the same as on the last occasion. The programme has evidently been very carefully framed, and is bound to meet with general approval."

Mr Walters’ fillies out of Slander and Yatterina are both by Hippocampus ; Nonpareil is by Korari out of No Name ; The Dauphin is by Traducer out of Maria Theresa; the En Avant filly is by Traducer; Louis D’Or is by Traducer out of Rupee ; and the filly out of Norms and the gelding out of Opera are both by Traducer. English files just to hand bring little fresh intelligence. Lord Boseberry has severed his connection with the Bussley stable, and his string is now under Constable’s care, at Newmarket. Lord Boseberry and Mr Peck, we are informed, parted tbe best of friends. The recently instituted " Epsom Grand Prize” of 1000 guineas has proved such, a success that it is likely to become an annual affair. Falsetto, the American four-year-old, of whom great things were expected, has been withdrawn from all his English engagements.
