C H RIBTOHUBCH. Monday, August 23. [Before G. L. Meliith, Esq., B.M.] Dbukk akd Dxsobdbely. Three first sffjnders were fined ss. Elizabeth Bennett was fined lOj. Denis Moroney, who created a disturbance in the Criterion Hotel, was fined 10s, Samuel Ashton and John Darmour were fined 5s each. Libel. —George Oaygill, William White Eraser, Joseph Carnahan, and Samuel Johnston, were charged with publishing a libel against James Izott on the 12t,h July. On the application of Mr Loughrey, who appeared for the defence, the case was adjourned till Friday, the 27th inst. Keeping a Disoedebly House. —Charles Burmeieter was char ,ed on information, with keeping a house in Gloucester street the resort of prostitutes and thieves. Mr Stringer Appeared for defendant. Sergeant Wilson deposed to the bad character of the house. It is nominally an oyster saloon, but is really the resort of the worst characters in the town. It is kept open frequently till two or three o’clock on mornings, and is generally a nuisance. Sergeant Pratt corroborated the evidence of the last witness. Mr Stringer addressed the Bench for the defence. The Court said that probably the case was brought as a warning to defendant to amend his ways. The House no doubt was a nuisance, and it would have to be reformed, With this understanding the present case would be dismissed with the caution. Unkkgistbebd Dogs.—For having unregistered dogs in their following—J. T. Clinton, case dismissed ; Jas. Dann, Wm. Waits, John Lilly, John Breeze, George Herbert, Patrick Byan, John Marshall, Benj. Hayes, and John Harding, were fined 20s and costs. Light Weights. —For haring weights not up to standard John J. Ingle and David Hamilton were each fined 20i and costs. Marion Parkcs, for having unstamped weights, was fined 20a and costs. Bichard Brown, for having unbalanced scales, was fined 20a and costs and the scales to bo forfeited. A. 0. Josling, for having an unstamped false spring balance in use (the defendant having been previously convicted), was fined 40a and costs, the balance to be forfeited . James Jenkins, for Laving short weights, was fined 20i and costs and the weights to be forfeited. Obtjblty to Animals. —O. O. Neill appeared to answer a charge of this description. Mr Stringer appeared for plaintiff, Mr J, S. Williamsjfor defendant. A. Orange deposed to lending defendant a horse on the sth inst., which then was perfectly sound. A few days after he found the horse in a very bad state, its shoulders and neck, under the collar, being one mass of ulcerated matter. A. Piper deposed to seeing[o’Neill driving the horse in a milk cart on the 12th inst. The horse was in good condition. Injuries to a certain extent and the driving were not denied. Accused was fined 20s with costa, and witnesses expenses, and solicitor’s fee, one guinea. Wiib Beating. —The case of this nature against John Diepenheim was further held over till the 30th instant, ponding the completion of a deed of separation. Assault. —James Davis was accused of beating Bebecca Jackson. Mr J. S. Williams for plaintiff; Mr Spackman for defendant. The assault was proved and defendant was fined 20s, costs 235, and solicitor’s fee 21s. Miscellaneous. Neglecting to provide for the maintenance of an illegitimate child, Wm. Spence was ordered to pay np within twenty-four hours. Henry Hunt, for obtaining goods on false pretences, was remanded to Southbridge. William Duke, charged with vagrancy, having left the town, the charge against him was withdrawn. Dan Howard, for not having a light burning on his cab, w*e fined 10s and costs. Wm. Hayward, for running his 'bus on other than his proper route, was fined 10s. For tethering a horse on a footpath, Wm. Williams was ordered to pay costs 2s. For getiing on a train while in motion, Carl Hausser was fined 10s. Wm. Hennam, a cab-driver, for preventing another cabman obtaining a fare, was fined 10s. A similar charge against John Tierney was dismissed. For allowing two horses to wander at large, James Bead was fined 5s ; and Thoe. Byan, on a similar charge, was fined ss. Henry Clarke, charged with drunkenness and indecent exposure, did not appear ; he was ordered to be fined 20s, and brought np at next sitting to show cause for his non-appear-ance. Wm. Hudson was charged with breaking windows i ithe house of Mrs Clarke. Mr Stringer, who oppeared for the defendant, contended that the offence was the result of an accident. Defendant was ordered to pay damages 7s and costs 13s. John White, charged with being under the influence of drink while in charge of a cab, was fled 10s, with costs and one witness’ expenses.
