A TEACHER.
Long years ago, when Spring time came, And set the birds to singing, And touched the sunset sky with flame, The buds and flowerets bringing, A. little boy, a little maid, Went hand in hand together, To reach the schoolhouse in the glade. Through all the bright Spring weather. Too young to know the ABC Of love, which Nature teaches, Within a school where all is free To those her influence reaches, They little thought of her, that day, Nor heard her footsteps patter ; Although she walked along the way, A kindly Alma Mater. But. as they resched the school without, He offered to assist her, And—on the step it came about— The urchin, somehow, kissed her. 'Twas time for learning to begin, And—it is sure as preaching— Unknown to her who taught within, Dame Nature went to teaching. Sweet Annie ! wife and mother now, With lore the years have brought her, Bends yearningly, to kiss the brow Of one —her only daughter— And wonders, with her thoughtful eyes, Half anxious and beseeching, If in her choice she will be wise When Nature does her teaching.
