Jurisdiction of District CourtsAt the District Court at Lawrence in Reg r na v O'Neill, for fraudulent insolvency, Judge Harvey held that the District Court could not proceed with a private prosecution. The prisoner is to be tried at the Supreme Court Circuit. OAMARU, August 20. Fire. The residence of Mr Samuel Holmes, at Hilderthorpe, waß destroyed by fire this morning. It was uninsured, and Mr Holmes loses something like £3OO. There is no clue to the origin of the fire. A Benevolent FirmMessrs J. and T. Meek, millers, have offered to give the Benevolent Society eight 501 b. bags of flour and eight 281 b. bags of oatmeal each month during the next three months. INTERCARGILL, August 20. Educational Economics; Tne Education Board, at its meeting today, determined on the following reductions in the salaries of teachers and officers of the Board—£loo to £149, two per cent.; £l5O to £lO9, four, per cent.; £2OO to £299, six per cent.; £3OO and upwards, seven per cent. The bonuses to teachers and allowances to committees were reduced fifty per cent., and
allowances were reduced to actual travellingexpenses. Mr Lumiden gave notice that he would move at the next meeting—" That in the opinion of this Board the reduction of the Parliamentary Tote for Education, by the sum of ten shillings per pupil, being the amount hitherto allowed for division amongst school committees for ordinary school expenses, is practically a departure from the soheme of free education, and, being to r they consider that such a change ought to have been accompanied by a legislative enactment, making substantial provision for enabling sohool committees to raise by an annual capitation charge, or otherwise, a sum equal to the cost of ordinary school management. Not Satisfied. Considerable dissatisfaction has been excited in_ Biverton by the news that the Orepuki railway is not to be completed.
