PHILOSOPHICAL INSTITUTE.
The third of the series of popular lectures in connection with this institution was delivered yesterday evening by Mr N. K. Oherrill at the _ Lecture Hall, Canterbury College, The subject was, “On the Progress of Modern Photography.” After a few introductory remarks the lecturer explained, step by step, the whole process of taking a photograph, by using collodion and the nitrate of silver bath. Ho then proceeded to describe the improvements which have taken place in the science of photography during the last five and twenty years, partioclarly the process of “ emulsion,” by which the bromides and nitrate of potash are driven out and the siver left on the “plate.” Ho also explained the use of “gelatine” instead of “ collodion,” and informed his hearers that yesterday afternoon he took a very good “ negative ” (which ho exhibited) in threequarters of a second, or in a twentieth part of the time which is usually taken. The lecture was illustrated by numerous experiments, and the large audience who were present showed their appreciation by frequently applauding the lecturer. The next lecture will be delivered on the 16th of September by Mr Dobson, 0.E., President of the Institute, on “ House and Homo.”
