The Artillery, City Rides, Stoke Rifles, and Waimea Rifles decided to a man to continue their services. The Naval Brigade officer stated that their members had agreed to consider the matter at their half-yearly meeting next week. George McGusty and Thomas Taylor were fined £IOO each, or twelve months’ imprisonment, to-day for illicit distillation. BALCLUTHA, August 19. Gatlin’s Diver Railway. At a meeting of the Oatlin’s railway committee held at Port Molyneaux lass evening, it was agreed to send the following circular to each of the Otago members of the Assembly —“ It has been resolved by the Balclutha and Oatlin’s River railway committee to ask yon for your support in the House of Representatives towards having the second section of the Gatlin’s River railway made a distance of four miles and thirty chains. The first section from Invercargill has been formed, and last session a sum of £12,000 was voted for immediate appropriation. Tenders were called for work and sent in, but from some unexplained cause n-me were accepted. The public here are very much disappointed and inconvenienced at this work being allowed to stand over, and should you see fit to give your support in the Assembly towards getting the £12,000 revoted, it may be the means of getting the line made to one of the oldest agricultural districts of Otago, and of forwarding a work which will amply repay the cost of construction, seeing that it leads to the gate of the most useful and extensive bushes in the Middle Island."
