NELSON, August 19. Volunteer Matters. At the Volunteer inspection. Captain Bunny, Commanding Officer, asked for a

decision as to whither the respective corps of the district would continue their services after the discontinuance of the oipitation. The Artillery, City Rides, Stoke Rifles, and Waimea Rifles decided to a man to continue their services. The Naval Brigade officer stated that their members had agreed to consider the matter at their half-yearly meeting next week. Only a few actually declared that they would not continue, but from the way in which they stated this, it appears that they are resolved to continue, but wish to discuss ways and means. The Nelson Gaol Inquiry. Messrs Curtis and Wells, the Justices who are to conduct the inquiry re Nelson Gaol, met this morning, but adjourned till Atkin—son, the late warder, can be brought to Nelson. BLENHEIM. August 19Fir e. A large two-storey building at Mount Pleasant was totally destroyed by fire on Tuesday night. The only person in the house at the time was an old lady, who was not aware that anything was wrong nntil the neighbors came to extinguish the flames. It is not known whether the building was insured. DUNEDIN, August 19. Illicit Distillation. George McGusty and Thomas Taylor were fined £IOO each, or twelve months’ imprisonment, to-day for illicit distillation. BALCLUTHA, August 19. Gatlin’s Diver Railway. At a meeting of the Oatlin’s railway committee held at Port Molyneaux lass evening, it was agreed to send the following circular to each of the Otago members of the Assembly —“ It has been resolved by the Balclutha and Oatlin’s River railway committee to ask yon for your support in the House of Representatives towards having the second section of the Gatlin’s River railway made a distance of four miles and thirty chains. The first section from Invercargill has been formed, and last session a sum of £12,000 was voted for immediate appropriation. Tenders were called for work and sent in, but from some unexplained cause n-me were accepted. The public here are very much disappointed and inconvenienced at this work being allowed to stand over, and should you see fit to give your support in the Assembly towards getting the £12,000 revoted, it may be the means of getting the line made to one of the oldest agricultural districts of Otago, and of forwarding a work which will amply repay the cost of construction, seeing that it leads to the gate of the most useful and extensive bushes in the Middle Island."
