On Tuesday night the Government steamer Hinemoa and the Union Steamship Company 8 steamer Hawea left the wharf within a minute or two of each other for Wellington, and the circumstance occasioned a little speculation as to which would reach the Empire City first. The betting, if any there was, may be said to have been on the Government boat as the favorite, and the fact that she was entrusted to carry the mails tended to strengthen the confidence in her ability to beat the company s vessel. That confidence, however, appears to have been misplaced, for the Hawea reached the wharf at 12.10 p.m. yesterday, just an hour before the other. Time, fifteen hours from wharf to wharf. . The Annie Hill will finish discharging to-day. The Samarkand and the Geraldine Paget, loading at the Gladstone Pier, each took in about 1500 sacks of grain yesterday. SHIPPING TELEGRAMS.
