WHO DRINKS IT ALL?
TO THE EDITOB OP THB PBESS. Sib, —In this morning’s issue I read Mr O. M. Gray’s letter headed “ Who drinks it all ?” I must warn the pnblio from taking Mr Gray’s figures and computations as correct. First error —A barrel of ale or porter does not always turn out 36 gallons. Brewers’ accounts show about 30, 28, 32, 27, &c. Second Error—The average price of a glass of colonial beer is not 4Jd, and not a tenth of tho beer is sold in glas.es. Third error—Mr Gray is ignorant that he can buy ale from a public house at 9d per quart, and that the consumers generally blow the froth off their pints and half-pints to bo sure of tho measure. Also, the 10 per cent, total abstainers are so in name only, so he need not try a deduction under that head. The doctors prescribe beer for members of 1.0.G.T, to get their strength up after weakness in fevers, &o. Yours, &c., William Smith.
