GISBOENE, August 11. A Cool Hand. Nahoware, a Maori, who was committed for trial some time ago, escaped yesterday morning by scaling the walls of tho gaol. He left word with some of his relatives that the reason for his running away was that the gaol accommodation was insufficient. So soon, however, as alterations take place in the supply of food and blankets, he promised to write to the magistrate and return to gaol. Tho prisoner is not yet captured. INVEROARGHLL, August 14. Expensive Education. The report at the meeting of .the Board of
Governor* of the High Schools showed that the cost of the girls High School during the half year was £772, and the fees were £387. The average attendance was forty-three, the 5°» fc ° f each pupil being nearly £36 yearly. The Board unanimously resolved that redactions in the staff be made. AUCKLAND, August 13. A Hew Special Settlement. Mr Fitzgibbon Louch, 0.E., who hat in hand a special settlement at Bellane, near Wangarei, leaves for England by the outgoing mail steamer. Mr Louch takes with him a number of introductions from his friends at Katikati, and anticipates that he will have so difficulty in disposing of the land to eligible immigrants. Fatal Boat AccidentA sad accident occurred off Aratapn at noon to-day, when four persons were drowned by the upsetting of a sailing boat in a squall. Their names were Cole, Allwright, clerk at Kopuru, Wilson, clerk at Mangawhere, and John Fielder, carpenter, of Mangawhere. The fifth man in the boat, Sims, got ashore. Wilson was married, and had a family living in Canterbury. Fire and Marine Insurance Co-Act-At a meeting to day of the Chamber of Commerce the following resolution was carried:—"That this Chamber is of opinion that a Bill similar in its provisions to that now under the consideration of the House is desirable, and would conduce to the interests of the public and to insurance companies carrying on business in New Zealand." The Chamber also passed a resolution adverse to an import duty on maize, and requesting the agricultural committee at Wellington to obtain a return of the local produce shipped to Fiji. Auckland College and Grammar School Bill. At a meeting of the Board of Governors of the Auckland College and Grammar School, a resolution was passed protesting against the passage of the Auckland College and Grammar School Bill now before the House, and requesting the Government to withhold its sanction and support. NEW PLYMOUTH, August 13. Stranding of the Julius VogelAt the inquiry held to-day into the cause of the stranding of the schooner Julius "Vogel at Waitara, the evidence went to show that the vessel was not supplied with proper gear. The captain had his certificate returned, at the same time the Gourt blaming the owner of the vessel for not keeping her properly equipped for sea. ImportantIt has been ascertained that F. A. Groube, one of the Australian team of cricketers in England, was born in Now Plymouth. WELLINGTON, August 13. Football. At a largely attended meoting of footballers, held this evening', a resolution waa unanimously passed that a team be ssnt to Auckland, taking, if possible, Nelson in the trip. Farther arrangements will be made at a future meeting. DisappointedIt is stated that a large public meeting will be held shortly, to protest against the action of the Government in ignoring the Welling-ton-Foxton railway. "Working Men's Club. The balance-sheet of the Wellington Working Men's Club shows a credit of £228. BIOKITIKA, August 13. Unhappy HokitikaAt a meeting of the Borough Council this evening a letter was read from the manager of the Bank of New Zealand declining to allow the Council an overdraft of £SOO only, although until quite recently the overdraft has never been less than double that amount, and often a great deal over. TIMARU, August 13. A Forlorn Hope. At a meeting of the Chamber of Commerce to-day, the following resolution was'carried : —" That Messrs. Sutter, Moody, and Batherford be appointed a deputation to proceed to Wellington, with the object of urging the Government to place money on the estimates this session to complete the. new railway station at TimaTu and the sidiogs; also, to call for for completing the railway line from Albury to Fairlie Creek with aa little delay as possible." OAMAEU, August 13. Getting on in the World. The Borough Council propose to borrow another £IO,OOO to complete the water woika scheme, and to guarantee the security a special rate of sixpence in the £ will be levied. This will make the rating of Oamaru 3s 3d in the£. County Councils. At a meeting of the County Council a circular was received from the Patea County Council asking the Council's co-operation and efforts to have County Councils constituted Land Boards. A resolution in favor of the proposition was lost by the casting vote of the chairman. DUNEDIN, August 13. The Kyehura MurderThe five Chinamen arrested on suspicion of being implicated in the Kyeburn murder were to-day remanded for seven days. Superintendent Weldon is still at the scene of the murder.
