CHURCH OF ENGLAND TEMPERANCE SOCIETY.
An adjourned public meeting, in connection with the Church of England Temperance Society, was held in St. John’s schoolroom last evening, his Lordship the Bishop presiding. There was a large attendance of ladies and gentlemen. The acting secretary (the Rev. H. O. M. Watson) read the report of the sub-committee appointed at last meeting, which was adopted, together with the rules drawn up. A number of gentlemen addressed the meeting, and the following resolutions were passed. Moved by Mr Black, and seconded by Mr Elavell—“ That the following be the committee for the ensuing year—the lie vs. E. Ootterill, A. B. Cocke, E, Q-. Brittan, W. O. Harris, and H. O. M. Watson, Messrs C. B. Blakiston, H. Bennetts, J. E. Parker, H. J. Twentyman, and H. E. Webb,” Moved by the Rev. Mr Harris, and seconded by Mr T. Gordon —“ That the following gentlemen be vice-presidents of the Society—the Very Rev. the Dean of Christchurch, the Ven. Archdeacons Dudley and Harper, the Hon. H. B. Qresson, 0. Whitefoord. Esq., and H, J. Tanored, Esq-’’ Moved by the Ven. Dudley, and seconded by the Rev. Mr Brittan —“That Dr. Russell be secretary, and Mr J. Holloway treasurer.” The Rev, Mr Watson spoke in favor of the Licensing Bill now before Parliament, and moved that the meeting urge the Government to have it passed this season, but his Lordship ruled the motion to be irregular. The proceedings closed with prayer.
