Alleged Departmental FavouritismGreat indignation is caused in the town by the publication of a telegram stating that the manager of the Auckland Telegraph office is to be superseded by a man from Blenheim. The opinion prevails that it is a gross piece of departmental favoritism, and a memorial protesting against it is being signed by the leading citizens. WELLINGTON, August 13. Wreck of the Sarah and MaryThe following are further particulars of the wreck of the Sarah and Mary. It appears she had bad weather on the Bth inst., which necessitated her seeking shelter under Moutava Island, Tory Channel. The crew turned in at ten o’clock the same night, but an hour later one of the crew called the captain and said the vessel was adrift and near the rocks. A kedge anchor was run out, but the line parted. An endeavor was made to set the head sails to wear the ship, but was unsucceaful. On going aft, the cabin was found to be on fire, and an attempt waa made to extinguish it, but without success. The crew then landed on the island. At daybreak, next morning, the crew proceeded to the vessel, which was still burning, but were unable to save anything. The fire is supposed to have been caused by the stove, which was in the cabin, being knocked over and setting fire to a tin of kerosene. The vessel is valued at £3OO, and is owned by her master, Captain Foreman, and is insured for £2O in the Victoria. Her cargo, which is colonial produce, is supposed to bo insured. DUNEDIN, August 13. Price of GoldThe price of gold is reduced sixpence an ounce, owing to the heavy escort charges. INVERCARGILL, August 13. FireDuffy’s fellmongery, near Riverton, has bean destroyed by fire.

An inquest was held at Spring Grove Valley re the death of Mrs Cole, of Annieeed Valley, who was killed by her horse falling on her shortly after leaving homo. A verdict of “Accidentally killed ” was returned. BLENHEIM. August 12, Found Dead. An inquest was held this evening on the body of the man found on the beach yesterday, and a verdict was returned of “ Found dead.” There was nothing to afford a clue as to the identity of deceased. The description of the man is : —Age, about twenty-five ; height, sft, 7in.; dark brown hair, and medium build. A silver ring made from a two-shilling piece was on his second finger. DUNEDIN, August 12. The Murder of Mrs Young. The inquest on the body of Mrs Young was concluded last night, the jury returning an open verdict. The evidence is very strong to

implicate the Chinese, but not sufficient to convict them, A rider was attached, recommending the Government to offer a reward, a* a conviction must depend upon the Chinese themselves.
