[PBEBB ASSOCIATION. | GEAHAM3TOWN, Auguat 9. Supposed Case of Suicide. The body of the man Otter, who mysteriously disappeared some days ago, was found in Kaneranga Creek yesterday afternoon. It is a supposed case of suicide. He was very eccentric, and some time ago went to England without saying a word to his family. Frightful Accident. A frightful accident happened on Saturday night to two working-men at the Hope Creek mine, through a blast exploding unexpectedly. Eiohard Free was torn with quartz splinters and burned fearfully on the body. His eyesight is gone, and probably he will not get over it. The other man, Glasacn, had his skull laid bare by the tamping bar striking him. He, also, is seriously hurt and cut. Both men are married with families. AUCKLAND, August 9. Found Dead. The body of an old man named Oashelle was picked up this morning near the wharf. The cause of death is unknown. LaterThe body found thin morning was not Cassell’s, and has not been identified yet. Schooner AshoreThe lona, which arrived from Bussell last night, reports a large fore-and-aft schooner at Tutukaka head. The craft is high on the beach, and presents the appearance of having ridden ashore on the top ef a large wave. She is believed to be the Eieetwing. NEW PLYMOUTH, August 9. The Waimate Plains. The Natives have dropped fencing, none having came down since Friday last. It is not known yet whether the Natives have left off by Ta Whiti’s orders, or whether they have refused to be made fools of any longer, seeing that seventy of them have been sent away. WELLINGTON, August 0. Sly Grog Selling. At the Magistrate’s Court to-day, Edward Hughes was fined £5 for sly grog selling. Through the reduction of the Volunteer capitation some officers and other members of local corps are let in for considerable amounts for debts contracted on the faith of the continuance of the capitation. Dogs and RabbitsThe Wallace County Council have resolved strictly to enforce the dog license fees, on the ground that dogs are as great a nuisance as rabbits, and are unnecessary in such numbers since the poisoning of the rabbits by phosphorous. AUCKLAND, August 7. Substantial Damages. Miss Garthwaite has been awarded £1650 for damages caused to her property by the Kaipara railway running through a portion of it. Sir Arthur Gordon succeeds Sir Hercules as Governor of New Zealand, but Sir Hercules will not await his arrival, which is not likely to take place for some time. BLENHEIM, August 8. Melancholy EventA melancholy event happened to-day. About 2.30 this afternoon the body of a man was found floating in the bond of Taylor's river, by a boy named Robinson. On making the discovery the boy ran and told his father, who procured assistance, and the body, which proved to be that of Thos. O. Sullivan, was drawn to the bank. Medical men were quickly in attendance, and every means were tiled to resuscitate the body, which was quite warm, but without effect. The unfortunate man had been greatly embarrassed in business affairs lately, and filed his schedule a few weeks ago. This seemed to prey upon his mind, inducing to intemperate habits. He left his home, which is near the river, not two hours before he was discovered, and there being scarcely three feet of water at the spot, it is presumed that the act was premeditated. Great sympathy is felt far his wife and young family. GEEYMOUXH, August 8. Suspicions EireA moat suspicious fire occurred here on Saturday morning between t'wo and three o'clock. Dr. Motiee, being out on professional business, smelt a strong smell of burning. After some time he traced it to an unoccupied building belonging to Messrs Smith and Barclay, drapers. On giving an alarm and bursting open the door, it was discovered that the flooring of an inner room was on fire. The building has not been occupied for over twelve months, and the last person that entered the building left everything secure on Tuesday last. A strong gorgo wind was blowing at the time, and had the fire not been discovered at the time nothing would have prevented the major portion of the business part of Greymauih being destroyed. This makes four fires within a fortnight. DtJNEDIN, August 8. Industrial School Inquiry. The official inquiry into the management of the Industrial School at Look-Out Point has commenced. Thera are now 259 children in the school, which is over crowded. Inquest on Mrs Young—Arrest of Two Chinamen. The inquest on the murdered woman Young was resumed on Saturday, and adjourned till Wednesday. Two Chinamen have been arrested. In the hut of one was found a pair of newly washed trousers, with blood spots on them.
