PARLIAMENTARY NEWS.

[PROSE OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.] WELLINGTON, August 7. With reference to Reuter’s cable message regarding the intended transfer of Sir H. Robinson to the Capo as successor to Sir Bartle Prere, I have tho best possible reason to believe that the report is absolutely true. I know that Sir Hercules expected that tho Cape would be his next government, and that during the last few days ho has been looking for information to that effect. I have grounds for believing that his Excellency received a definite intimation yesterday of his intended transfer. The nows has been received here with general regret, especially by those who take an interest in the improvement of racing matters, regarding which much benefit, from Sir Hercules having finally decided to take an active part in it, was expected. I hear that many more dismissals are pending in the Public Works Department, and some in the other departments. The appendices to the Public Works Statement are exceptionally full, extending to 130 pages, with elaborate and copious maps, tables, &o. Mr Lawson, Commissioner of North Island Railways, reports large reductions in the working expenses, but suggests an equal increase in charges, with a decreasing scale for distances, adding a small percentage on the fares and freight for all distances, which would give £BO,OOO net addition to the revenue, equal to 1 per cent, on the construction cost; also an additional mileage rate on non-paying sections, and over exceptionally difficult country. Mr Conyers, the South Island Commissioner, in his annual report, recommends the re-adjustment of passenger fares, the entire abolition of return tickets, with commensurate reductions on single fares; also the reorganisation and classification of the staff.
