MAGISTRATES' COURTS.
CHBISTOHUBOH. Satttrday, August 7. [Before G. L. Mellish, Esq., B.M.J Dbunkenness. Patrick Kjan, apprehended at Bingsland for drunkenness, was fined 10a. A Watoh StbalißE.—Edward Beypolds, a young man well known to the police, was charged with stealing a silver watch, valued at £2, the property of Arthur Bae, and also with stealing a gold watch, valued at £l2, the property of Lawrence Devlin Accused pleaded guilty to both offences. Inspector O'Donnel—There are three previous convictions agairst him for larceny, and he was only released from gaol last month, after serving a term for a similar offence to that now alleged against him. He was arrested last eveniDg, and as there are three witnesses for the prosecution, I would ask that he be remanded until such time as your "Worship thinks fit. 1 may mention the circumstances under which these watches were stolen. This man represented himself as being in-poor circumstances, and obtained accommodation at a lodging house in town, and during the night he went into the rooms of other ! lodgers and extracted these watches from their clothing. The Court —Prisoner will b« remanded until Monday, when I will sec whether to commit him for trial or not. LYfIELIOM. Saturday, August 7. (Before J. T. Bouse, Esq., J.P.) A Valublbss Cheque.—William Andrew Baker, on remand from Dunedin, was charged with passing a valueless cheque to the landlord of the British Hotel. The Besident Magistrate hei g abeent, accused was re manded until Monday. A StrsPECTBD Mate.—Henry Belmont, late mate of the schooner Dido, was charged with larceny of £lO in money, the property of th« master, a sack, and with larceny as a bailee of two silver watches, the property of Thomai Wright. Accused was remanded until Friday next, to admit of the captain of the vessel being present. A NKaißCTßrjn Fathbb.—lsaac Hevrton was brought before the Court to answer a charge of not contributing to the support of his child now in the Industrial School, while able to do to. Case adjourned until Monday.
