At the Supreme Court, in the ease of the Bank of New Zealand v Schwartz, a claim for £720, balance of account, judgment was given for the plaintiff. The case of Climie v City Corporation, being a claim for £4700, for commission on drainage scheme and alleged wrongful dismissal, is now proceeding. AUCKLAND, August 1. Obituary. Mr John Cowell died yesterday, aged 60. He was one of the oldest settlers in New Zealand. He accompanied Houghton on his southern expedition, also Potatau on his expedition to Taranaki. He was obliged to leave Kawhai, with other Europeans, during the first Taranaki war. Found Dead. The. body of a woman has been found in the street at Otahuhu. Her name as yet is unknown. International Civilities. A shooting and fishing excursion was given by the Auckland Club to the officers of the French warship Qinchen, and was a great success. Oddfellowship. The annual meeting of delegates of the Oddfellows' Lodges (Manchester Unity) in the Auckland district was held yesterday. The secretary stated that the returns read showed that the Lodges had expended £1045 14s 43 during the year in Bick allowances, and in funerals £247. The gain in funds during the year amonnted to £1857 14s sd. TIMARU, August 1. Customs DutiesThe Customs duties for July amounted to £2412 as against £2981 for the corresponding month last year. Statistical-Fifty-six births, fourteen deaths, and six marriages were registered in Timaru and district during July.
