The ship Fiji is to leave Newcastle August 7th for here. She is a new ship, built by Harland, Wolfe and Co., of Belfast, and comes here under charter to Messrs Eoyso, Stead and Co. to load here on their account. . It is stated that the Mallowdale, discharging at Port Chalmers, proceeds thence to San Francisco to load. -p . The barque Van Dieman, loading at jrori Chalmers, is to come on here to finish. Mr Plimsoll, lata M P. for Derby, was examined recently before a select committee of the House of Commons on the subject of losses ot merchant shipping and crews at sea. He presented returns showing that more than 90UD lives had been lost in five years, and m many cases no inquiry had been made into the circumstances from which disaster resulted. The greater part of loss was owing to ships being loaded with grain in bulk. The principal remedy would be to place grain ir bags which could be easily moved so as to adjust and trim the ship. # The s.s. Grafton, Captain Johnson, arrived yesterday at 11 a.m. from Wellington, having left there on Wednesday at 4.15 p.m. The steamer will leave to-day for Wellington and the "West Coast ports. The Union Steamship Company s s.s. Kotomahana, Captain Underwood, arrived yesterday from Melbourne at 9.15 a.m. She left there on the 21st current, and called at Hobart Town, Bluff, and Port Chalmers.
