INDUSTRIAL EXHIBITION.

A meeting of the committee was held last evening. Present —Messrs. Allan (chairman), Cherrill, W. S. Smith, England, Bants, Coleman, Jameson, Toomer, Hull, Wood, Howland, Hulbert, Jenkins, and Charters (hon. sec ), Professors Bicterton and Yon Haast. The Chairman said that in round numbers he thought that about £SOO balance would remain. He suggested that the committee could very gracefully hand over a gratuity of £3 3s to the police library fund for the services rendered by them.

The committee agreed to this, and it was also resolved that a gratuity of £3 3s should be handed to the fire brigade library fund in recognition of their services. It was resolved that letters of thanks be forwarded to the manager of the Gas Company, Mr Armstrong, Mr Doune, Mr E. Back, Mr Conyers, Messrs Montgomery and Co., and Messrs Andrews and Beaven, for the assistance rendered by them in making the exhibition a success, also to Mr J. W. Morton as caterer.

Mr Howland laid before the committee samples of towai and hickory. He could not understand how the Hon. Mr Gresson could have got hold of the idea that kowhai was better than hickory. This seemed to point to the conclusion that the coachbuilding interest had ignored the native woods. Now his thirty-three years' experience was opposed to the Hon. MrGresson's remarks. Professor Yon Haast said that ho had tried kowai as handles for geological hammers, and found that it was not equal to hickory. Mr Howland said that ho had suggested to Mr Wakefield that elm and hickory should be planted on the railway reserves. Mr Jenkins said that he had exhibited kowhai circles to show its facilities for bending. He did not think the pieces of wood brought by Mr Howland were fairly comparative. Mr Banks moved—“ That in the opinion of the committee the surplus funds accruing from the late Industrial Exhibition (after all accounts are paid) should be handed over to the Association for Postering Local Industries, and that the funds up to £3OO should be lodged for a fixed period in the Bank of New Zealand at current rates, and further that at least one month’s notice should be given in committee of any intention to rescind *■ or alter this resolution.”

Professor Bickerton thought it would-be far better for the resolution to state that the committee would recommend that the funds up to £3OO should be invested at interest for the purpose of another exhibition. Mr Hulbert agreed with Professor Bickerton.

Mr Jameson suggested that the resolution should be amended as follows :—“ That the surplus funds accruing from the late Exhibition be handed to the committee of the association for the promotion of local industries, with a recommendation that a sum of not leas than £3OO be invested for the promotion of similar exhibitions in future.”

Mr Hulbert seconded Mr Jameson’s amendment.

Profcssor.Von Haast suggested the addition of the words after the [conclusion of the resolution, “ that no alteration in the above resolution bo made unless at a general meeting of the members of tho association convened for the purpose of considering the same.” _ ‘ Some discussion ensued, and ultimately Mr Jameson amended his resolution by adding, “That this resolution be not rescinded except at a general meeting of the association convened for the purpose of considering tho same.” The resolution, as amended in accordance with Professor Yon Haast’s suggestion, was then put and carried unanimously. The committee then adjourned to Thursday nsxt at 7.30, for a final meeting, the balancs-sheot to be submitted.
