VOLUNTEER PARADE.
The usual monthly inspection parade took place at the Drilhhed last evening. After inspection, the battalion were put through a number of movements by Major Lean and Captains Craig and Warner, acting majors, and the evolutions were performed with a smartness not seldom witnessed at these parades. Colonel Packe was in command, and after parade made a few remarks, complimenting the men on their steady drill that evening, and expressing a wish that the officers as well as the men would make themselves efficient in skirmishing drill. He anticipated that the Q-ovemment would do away with the capitation grant after next December, still he thought they might be able to maintain their present standard. Personally he had been in the volunteers some years, and meant to stick to them as long as the men held together, and in conclusion he remarked on the success which attended the volunteer movement in the mother country. It is Colonel Packers to call out the volunteers shortly for skirmishing practice with blank cartridge. The men appeared to be well satisfied and much encouraged by the observations which their Colonel addressed to them, and there can be no doubt that his expressed intention with regard to skirmishing drill is a step in the right direction.
