THE PUBLIC CEMETERY.

The question of having a road made to the public cemetery is one to which the Cemetery Board have devoted considerable attention, as the necessity of establishing an efficient means of communication between God’s acre and the principal centres of. population cannot be overlooked, and does not admit of delay. With the object of furthering this desirable work, the chairman of the Cemetery Boardand the chairman of the Avon Road Board had an interview some time since, and at a meeting of the former body subsequently a report was read indicating that the co-opera-tion and assistance of the Road Board might bo counted upon. The matter again came under consideration at the Belwyn County Council yesterday, when an application was read from the Cemetery Board for a sum of £3OO out of money standingto the credit of the Avon Road Board, for the purpose of constructing the road in question; but the chairman of the Avon Board stated that some misapprehension seemed to have arisen as to the intentions of his Board, who were not disposed to be charged with the expense, and applied to the Council to have the whole of the money standing to the credit of ,the Avon Road district handed over to them for the purchase of recreation reserves. A discussion took place, during which the equal responsibility of the city and surrounding districts in this matter was duly considered, and eventually a resolution was passed to tho. effect that a sum of £IOO be granted to the Cemetery Board for tbe purpose of forming and metalling a road to the Cemetery, provided that £2OO bo granted by the surrounding municipalities and Road Boards.
