THE LORD ADVOCATE FOR SCOTLAND.

TO THE BDITOE OF THE PEBSS. Sib, —In your impression of this date there appears a London telegram to the effect that Mr McLaren, the Lord Advooate, and previous'y defeated candidate for Edinburgh, had been defeated for Berwick on his again endeavoring to enter the House of Commons. This despatch reveals either extraordinary ignorance or carelcsoness on the part of the sender.

Mr McLaren's father has been for many years member for Edinburgh, and flits for that city in the present Parliament, whilst he himself wrested the Wigtown Burghs seat from the Conservatives at the general election, but was defeated at the election consequent on his acceptance of office. The telegram intended to adviae us of his first defeat was also bungled, as it stated that Lord Advocate " Watson " had been defeated on seeking re-election. Mr Watson was Lord Advocate under the Conservative Ministry, and just previous to its resignation was elevated to a life peerage, so that the statement that, he had been defeated on seeking re-election was rather puzzling. Of course in New Zealand it is of small moment whether the Lord Advocate is called Watson or McLaren, or whether he is defeated for Edinburgh or Wigtown, but what is of importance is the question whether the telegrams on which so many depend for all they know of Home affairs are or art/ not reliable about matters which in Great Britain arc within everybody's knowledge. Yours, &c, EDINBUEGENSI9.
