SYDENHAM BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The ordinary meeting of the above was hold at the offices, Sydenham, last evening. There were present his Worship the Mayor, Crs. White, Langdown, Nicholls, Andrews, Shierlaw, Pavitt, Hall, and Joyce. His Worship intimated that there was not a largo amount of business on the order paper, but he took the opportunity of remarking on one or two matters. The Council, he said, would no doubt be glad see the progress made with the Bill affecting the South town bolt, and he would recommend that preliminary steps should be taken towards carrying out the work. With regard to the loan, he saw no reference made to the letter ordered to be written to the Bank of Now Zealand in reference to making arrangements for temporary accommodation, and he thought some steps should be taken in that direction, but the matter should be considered thereafter. Personally, he thought the proper plan would be to call the ratepayers together, and let them consider it. Or. Langdown apologised for the absence of Cr. Charters, and on his motion that gentleman was accorded leave of absence. The following circular was read from the Colonial Secretary’s office I am directed by the Colonial Secretary to inform yon that the Government are desirous of laying before Parliament a return showing in detail how much money was expended during the year ended 31st of March, 1880, for the indoor and outdoor relief of the poor in each provincial district of the colony, and in each ot the chief towns and suburbs, the return also to
show, where obtainable, the sex and nationalit of the recipients of the said indoor and outdoor relief; the return also to show whether paid by Government or by local bodies or otherwise. I am, therefore, to request that yon will be_ good enough to furnish the required information in the enclosed form, and return the same to this office as early as convenient. (Signed) G. S. Cooper. The matter was left in the bands of the town clerk. Other correspondence was then read, including a letter from Mr Stevens enclosing copy of Canterbury Rivers Amendment Bill. Betters were also received from the other members on the same subject. In reply to the Mayor, The Secretary pointed out that the Bill did not meet with the wishes of the Council as to the question of representation. Or. Joyce moved, and it was carried—“ That the town clerk be requested to telegraph to Mr Andrews re tho Canterbury Rivers Bill, and to ascertain what position this Board held thereunder, to obtain boundaries of sub-dis-tricts, and that the letters from the other members be acknowledged.” Tho following copy of a resolution passed was sent by tho Drainage Board :—“ That tho Board approves of tho borough of Sydenham returning a member to tho Drainage Board, and that the chairman, Messrs Tanored and Duncan ho a committee to approve of the schedule.”

Tho letter and accompanying plan was referred to the works committee with power to act.
A letter was read from the secretary to the Drainage Board, asking if the Council intended to collect the drainage rate for 1880 as usual. It appeared that the matter had already been settled by a previous communication, agreeing to the proposal, and the clerk was instructed to refer the Board to letter of the 3rd May. An application was received for the patronage of the Council on behalf of an entertainment in aid of the regalia fund of the Oak of Sydenham Lodge of Druids. It was agreed to accede to tho request. A petition was received from stonebreakers in tho Council yard, bringing under notice that the price (2s 6d per yard) offered for stonebreaking was insufficient to keep their wives and families in the necessaries of life, and praying that the Council would give the original remuneration, namely, 3s per yard. The petition was referred to tho works committee, with power to act. The works committee reported as follows : That we have received tenders for the construction of Devon road, but have deferred opening the same until the solicitor’s opinion has been obtained as to the right of the Council to deal with the road. We have also received tenders for the supply of shingle for the ensuing year. Tho tenders are now under our consideration, and we ask for permission to accept a tender for the same, and for the construction of Devon road, if tho committee think it desirable to do so. The bathing sheds have been removed to the Council yard. Messrs Greig and Hunter have completed their contract for the erection of the bridge over tho river Heathcote, in Wilson’s road. The committee ask permission to leave the footpaths in Colombo street to the proposed levels. On the motion of Or. White, tho report was adopted. The lighting committee reported as to placing an additional lamp on Harper street, recommending that the lamp bo placed at the corner of Durham street and So :ond street. At the request of Or.
