CHRISTCHURCH DEBATING SOCIETY.

The fortnightly meeting of the Ohristohuroh Debating Society was held yesterday evening in St. John's Schoolroom, when the chair was taken by Mr E. Dobson. The attendance of members, probably owing to the attraction of the Industrial Exhibition, was small. Mr Earnshaw opened on " Protection v Free Trade," and conoluded his remarks, which were strongly in favor of protection as applied to young countries, - by moving—" That a protective policy in regard to manufactures and resources has become a necessity for the future advancement and development of New Zealand." A discussion enßued, in which the Eev. H. 0. M. Watson, Messrs Griffiths, Townsend, James, Glen, Beaven, Hobday, Heaver and Eokberg took part. Mr Earnshaw replied, and the Chairman having summed up, a division was taken when Mr Earoshaw's motion was negatived by a majority of "6 to 4. The next subjeot for discussion will be " Dickens v Thackeray," Mr Beaven supporting tho former, and Mr Townsend the latter. It is probable that the subject of "Protection v Free Trade" will be again brought forward at an early date under more favorable circumstances.
