Hewson, immediate Fast Master, was presented with an elegant and elaborate Past Master's jewel. TIMARU, July 16. Gored by a Sow. At Saltwater Creek, near Timaru, yesterday, a child two years old, son of a farmer named Wilson, was knocked down by a bow, gored with its tueks, and so severely bitten that its life iB despaired of. Two fingers of the left hand were bitten through and had to be amputated at the Hospital, while its head, face, and body are covered with lacerated wounds. WELLINGTON, July 16. The Unemployed. It is intended to Bend another batch of twenty-five unemployed to Patea in a week and fifty more in three weeks hence. FireA fire was discovered last night in Mr Whitehead's stables. It was extinguished hefore much damage was done. Tfcty were insured in the Union Co. for £IOO. Accidentally Drowned. Ernest Gilchrist, nineteen months old, wan accidentally drowned at Otaki yesterday. DUNEDIN, July 16. . Valuable Discovery. A splendid antimony lode has been diecovered at the head of Lake Wakatipu. Suicide. George Russell was found dead in his bed at Queeiißton, having blown his brains out. The report was not heard, though the other inmates of the house were separated from him only by a canvass petition. No cause is assigned for the action. BLENHEIM, July 16. Fire and a man burnt to deathStevenson's Hotel, at Renwick town, seven miles from Blenheim, was destroyed by fire last night. One man, name at present unknown, was burnt to death. NAPIER, July 16. Mining 1 News. The party specially selected to visit and report on the Moheka quartz reef returned to-day, and brought back a quarter of a ton of stone, which was lodged in the Bask of New Zealand, for transmission to Auckland, for crushing and testing. The party reports that quartz reefs undoubtedly have been discovered of auriferous character, but the gold is extremely fine, and must be treated &e such, requiring a large capital and perseverance. INVERCARGILL, July 16. A Miniature Bush. There is soma excitement at Riverton and & miniature rush has taken place to a creek not a hundred yards from the township. About a dozen men are at work, and get a few specks every dish, but not enough to pay. The false bottom has been pierced and gold ie • still found. The parties intend testing the true bottom. Exhibition Collection. The rabbit skins, building stone, petrifications, &c., forming the collection for the Melbourne Exhibition, are still open and are visited by large numbers. A suggestion baa been made that the very fine collection of New Zealand fishes in the Museum collection of the Athenaeum should be sent over to the Exhibition. The Building TradeThe building trade here is pretty brisk, and a hotel and four shops are going op in the main street; also, the Girls' High School, the Hall of Justice, and several private buildings in other parts of the town. AUCKLAND, July 15. Enquiry. The Industrial Home enquiry commenced to-day. Colonel Haultain and Captain Dalby were examined as to the interior economy andmanagement of the school. OHINEMUTU, July 15. Terrace Charges. On Wednesday evening a meeting was held at Wairoa by the Ngatehtncmihi and Tuhourangi tribes, for the purpose of drawing up a new scale of charges to the Rotomahana terraces. The charges are to be reduced, and the two tribes have agreed to amalgamate. Earthquake. On Tuesday, about half an hour past midnight, a very severe shock of earthquake was felt at Wairoa, a few miles from the Rotomahana Lake and Terraces, which lasted about thirty seconds. WELLINGTON, July 15. Government Insurance Department. The business of the Government Insurance Department for the year ended June 30th shows the following results: —Over 3000 proposals were received, for more than & million sterling. Of these proposals, upwards of 2200 became policies, assuring a stmi exceeding £720,000. New premiums exceed £27,000, which is considerably in excess of last year, notwithstanding the depression which has prevailed. The quinquennial investigation has now commenced, and the results, after being examined and certified to by eminent English actuaries, will be laid before Parliament next session, in accordance with the Act. NELSON, July 15. Obituary. The Hon. N. Edwards, M.L.C., died at his residence, Sunnyside, this morning, aged fifty-eight. DUNEDIN, July 15. Shot Himssll. George Russell, butcher's assistant, shot himself last night through the head with a rile.
