SHORTHORN STUD CATTLE.
By the Te Anau Messrs H. Mat son and Co. have received a consignment of shorthorns for salo by auction from the celebrated stud af Messrs Bobertson of Oolac. The consignment consists of two bulls and four cows. They have arrived in splendid condition, but'owing to the law respecting importation of stock, they will have to undergo quarantine for a period, although, from the fact that no such thing as plouro has ever been known amongßt the herd, thia is almost an unnecessary precaution. However, they have been removed to Mr Matson's farm, Springfield, where they
will be kept until the expiration of the term. From the subjoined description of the stook, an idea will be obtained of their undeniably high character: HHOBTHORN STUD BULLS. I—Oxford Duke of Cambridge 2nd, rich roan, calved 7th April, 1877, got by 25th Duko of Oxford (31003), dam Riohmond Rose, by Duko of Waterloo. Oxford Duko of Cambridge 2nd is tho Bire of 31st Duchess of Derrimut.. awarded first prize in her class at tho National Agricultural Society's Show 1879. Oxford Duke of Cambridge 2.<id was purchased by Messrs R3bortson Brothers at Mr J. C. Irving's sale in 1878, for 1000 guineas, and is only sold to make room for thoir late importations. 25th Duke of Oxford (31003) was bred by his Grace the Duke of Devonshire at Holker Hall, and was got by the renowned 4th Baron Oxford (25580) out of Grand Duchess of Oxford sth, who is by Priam (18567) from the Oxford tribo. Grand Duchess of Oxford sth is the dam of Grand Duchess of Oxford 11th, sold ut Holkor sale for 1000 guineas, being then in calf; she and the produoo made 3000 guineas tho following year at Mr Moore's sale; ohe is also the granddam of Grand Duchess of Oxford 18th, sold at Holker sale in 1871 for 1005 guineas, and resold for 2000 guineas, and of Grand Duchess of Oxford 21st, sold at Holker sale 1878 for £1627 10s. The average of the Oxford tribe at Holker sale 1878 was £1787 12s fid for oows and heifers, and £1333 10s for bulls. Riohmond Rose was purohased by Messrs Robertson Brothers at Mr J. 0. Irving's sale 1878 for 700 guineas. 2.—22nd Duke of Derrimut, roan, calved 14th April, 1876; got by Oxford Cherry Duke (32016) ; dam, 3rd Duohess of Derrimut, by Duko of Brunswiok (25937). 22nd Duke of Derrimut is the sire of 6fch Duke of Oolao, awarded first prize as the best bull calf at the National Agricultural Society's Show, Melbourne, 1879. Oxford Cherry Duke (32016) was imported by Mr Richard Morton, and sold by him, when he disposed of his herd, to Messrs. Robertson Brothers, Colao, for £2500. He was bred by Lord Penrhyn, of Penrhyn Castle, and is by tho noted sire 4th Baron Oxford (25580) out of Cherry Duchess I3tb, who is by 3rd Duke of Wharfdale. Oxford Cherry Duke (32016) is the sire of tho following noted shorthorns : —l7th Duke of Derrimut,-sold at Colao annual sale, 1876, for 850 guineas : Cherry Oxford, the champion bull at the Grand National Show, Sandhurst, 1876, and afterwards sold by Mr Samuel Gardiner for 1000 guineas; 24th Duke of Derrimut, first prize-taker at the Polwarth and South Granville Show, September, 1877 ; also first prize at Geelong Show ; and first prize, as well as champion, at Camperdown Show, in October, 1877 ; first prize and champion at Ballarat Agricultural Society's Show, November, 1877 ; first prize and champion at the National Agricultural Society's Show, Melbourne, November, 1877, and afterwards sold for 2450 guineas at the 1878 Colao sale (this is the highest price ever realised for a shorthorn in the Australian colonies). He is also the sire of a number of other high priced cattle. SHOBTnOBN STUD COWS. 3.—2Bth Duohess of Derrimut, roan, calved 2nd June, 1878 ; got by Geneva's Earl, dam 15th Duohess of Derrimut, by Oxford Cherry Duke (32016). Geneva's Earl is by that noted sire Earl of Geneva (31068), out of Matilda 7th, by Duke of Brunswick (25937). Matilda 7th is also dam of 6th Duke of Brunswick, purchased by the late Mr E. Henty, of Muntham, for 660 guineas ; also of Cherry Oxford 2nd, purchased by Mr James Horwood, of Bridgowater Park, for 425 guineas, and cow in use in that gentleman's herd. She is also full sister to Matilda 9th, for whom Mr S. Gardiner gave 1250 guineas at Oolac sale, 1876. Cherry Oxford sth, puriba?ed by Mr J. G. Brisbane at Messrs Robertson Brothers' sale, 1878, for 1250 guineas, and used in that gentleman's herd, and afterwards sold to the A. A. Company, Newcastle, for 800 guineas, comes from the same family. Geneva's Earl is the sire of 27th Duohess of Derrimut, awarded second prize at the National Agricultural Society's show, Melbourne, being only beaten *>y 6th Countess of Colao, also bred at Oolao. 15th Duohess of Derrimut, by Oxford Cherry Duke (32016), out of 9th Duohess of Derrimut, who was half-Bister to the oelebrated oow 3rd Duchess of Derrimut, the champion female at the Melbourne Exhibition, 1874. 4.—Flower of Derrimut 2nd, roan, calved 24th February, 1879 ; got by Oxford Cherry Duke (32016) ; dam Geneva's Flower, by Earl of Geneva (31068). Oxford Cherry Duke (32016) was imported by Mr Richard Morton, and sold by him, when he disposed of his .hard, to Messrs Robertson Brothers, Colao, for £2500. He was bred by Lord Penrhyn, of Penrhyn Castle, and is by the no' <d sire 4th Baron Oxford (25580) out of Cnerry Duchess 13th, who is by. 3rd Duke of Wharfdalo. Oxford Duke ot Cambridge 2nd was purchased by Messrs Robertson Brothers at Mr J. C. Irving's sale, at Jarvisfield, Picton, New South Wales, in 1878, for 1000 guineas, and is of pure Bates blood. His sire, 25th Duke of Oxford (31,003) was bred by His Grace tho Duke of Devonshire at Holker Hall, and was got by the rsnowned 4th Baron Oxford (25580) out of Grand Duohess of Oxford sth who is by Priam (18,567) from the Oxford tribe. Grand Duchess of Oxford sth is the dam of Grand Duchess of Oxford 11th, sold at Holker sale for 1000 guineas, being then in calf; she and the produoe made 3000 guineas the following year at Mr Moore's sale; she is also the grandam of Grand Duchess of Oxford 18th, sold at Holker sale, 1871, for 1005 guineas, and resold for 2000 guineas, and of Grand Duchess of Oxford 21st, sold at Holker sale, 1878, for £1627 10s. The average of the Oxford tribe at Holker sale, 1878, was £1,787 12s 6d for cows and heifers and £1333 10s for bulls. Richmond Rose, the dam of Oxford's Duke of Cambridge 2nd, was purchased by Messrs Robertson Brothers at Mr J. C. Irving's sale, 1878, for 700 guineas. 6.-sth Countess of Alvie, red, with little white, calved 2nd November, 1878 ; got by Oxford Cherry Duke (32,016) ; dam Countess of Alvie, by Earl of Geneva (31,068). The Earl of Geneva (31,068), purchased by Messrs Robertson Brothers for 1650 guineas, was bred by Mr R. P. Davies, Horton Park, England, from the celebrated Kirklevington family of pure Bates blood. His produce at the Oolao sale, 1878, made £502 lOs, at the 1877 sale £420, and at the 1876 sale £853 2s 6d. These fine animals will be offered for sale in about a month from date.
