The appendix to the West Coast Commissioners report gives the details of the expenditure of £2OOO advanced for alleged compensation for lands purchased on the West Coast. The following are, among other items, catalogued as supplied by the storekeepers per order of the Hon. J. Sheehan :—June, 1878 : Umbrella, 20a ; 1 shawl, 25s—for William Thompson ; 1 shirt, lis 6d ; 13 yards print, 10s 6d ; 1 waistcoat, 10s ; 1 pair trousers, 16s ; 1 cap, 5s ; 31b. candles, 3s ; 1 umbrella, 20s ; 2 rugs, 50a; 1 shawl, 25s—for Sergt. Wallace; 1 pair blankets, 26s ; 36 pannikins, 18a ; 8 buckets, 36s 5 2 iron pots, 10s ; 7 knives, 15s 9d ; 4 axes, 3ia ; 61b candles, 6j—Mete Kingi; 2 rugs, 50a—bearer ; 2 blankets, 32a ; 1 shawl, 25s ; 31b candles, 3a ; 1281 b tobacco, at 4s 9d, £3O 83 6d ; 1 gross matches, 60a; 6 gross pipes, 30s, £SB 183 3d—per order Grace ; one umbrella for Rewi, 20a. Bewi ordered on July 10th eighteen guineas worth of goods, including salmon, pain killer, wizard oil, proserved milk, 2501bs of poik, and other delicacies. In December the Native Minister gave another order for shawls, elastic side boots, costume, trousers, &c, to the extent of nearly £l4. There are several printed pages of such items, making up the £2OOO.
